Newbie questions...

Post by kunkel321 »

Hi All,

I got XYplorer while it was on GAOTD a while back and have been using it off and on, seems pretty cool.
I've used xplorer2 for years, but lately I've been getting frustrated with it because it chokes when opening on my work laptop if I'm not plugged in to the network at my school district. XY also has a delay, but it's only about 9 seconds--compared to about 30-40 with x2...

Anyhoo. I qualify for the "academic" pricing, so I definitely want to take advantage of that. It looks like it is not offered for the "lifetime" license though.... Does anyone know if there is an upgrade policy (i.e. buy Acad Pro now, them upgrade to Lifetime Pro later on) and how much that would cost? Does XY ever go on sale?

Also, I can't seem to get .bmp files to accept color-coding... I didn't see anything about it when searching the forum, so maybe I just have some setting wrong?

Lastly, Kudos to the developer(s). One can tell that XYplorer has had a lot of work put into it. It's attractive, intuitive and seems to be pretty stable

i presume you talk about Color Filters: go to Tools>Configuration>Color Filters, add new line or modify one(there is line with png, gif, jpg) with *.bmp, select colors with "Define color"-buttons. yet tick "Apply all checked patterns to the list".

The developer probably assumes - rightly or wrongly :) - that at least the student population of academia move on to paying jobs, at which point they or their employer has to provide a regular license.

The developer should be back tomorrow with a definitive answer, but my guess would be no based on the fact that there's no upgrade from the Home to the Professional edition, or from the Standard to the Lifetime license, either.

Hi All,
Thanks for the fast replies.
The pricing thing does make sense I suppose--And as others have pointed out, the normal pricing is fair. I will definitely checkout BDJ to though! I've gotten several goodies there.

Re Color Filters: Sorry about that--it was an id10t error...
I made a screenshot of my prefs and was just about to post it when I realized I needed SEMICOLONS separating the extensions, rather than commas. It makes a difference!

EDIT: Re Bits Du Jour... Apparently 264 other people have also clicked the "I want this" button (to get an email notification when it's offered again)!! :)

Hi and welcome,

Yes, but this thing is dumbly cumulative. I guess about 250 of those people already have XY. :)

And, as nas8e9 correctly assumed, I offer no upgrade discounts at all. Not that I dislike the idea but it would complicate a process that I need to have as streamlined as possible to save my precious time for coding.

I was a "poor" student too (for much too long, btw) and had developed a strong experience in getting "great" software "bargains". and

Well, let me say it this way: If Adobe would offer me a Photoshop Lifetime license for double the regular license fee I would not think about it for a nano second.

We're discussing the equivalent of some pints here. Go figure!

Cheers,
Filehero
