Seriously like the quick name search
Bravo! One of the better features you've added. Thank you.

Looks nice to me too, however where's the difference from a Visual Filter, beside recursion?

Yes, there is some overlap. But recursion is quite a difference, isn't it? And QNS allows to state complex stuff if you are in the mood.Marco wrote:Looks nice to me too, however where's the difference from a Visual Filter, beside recursion?
BTW, I vaguely plan to add a similar dialog called Quick Name &Tags Search. You would enter one string, say "Chicago" and it would search filenames, labels, tags, and comments for "Chicago" and return a file if any of these fields matches. Does this sound interesting?

I don't use Tags, but your suggestion sounds like a nice feature for those that do. Just being able to find names quickly and easily and recursively is awesome.

Re: Seriously like the quick name search
Yes, it sounds interesting, however these features that aim to speed up the most common tasks should have their interface carefully choosen.
You currently put emphasis on actions (toolbar buttons) and location (address bar). The GUI lacks, imho, it's own search bar for bringing attentions to the subjects of the actions, ie files and folders.
Implementing a search bar (like in web browsers) for quick operations like QNS and QN&TS would reasonable and natural.
I know you're planning such toolbar for Live Searches, however an idea would be implementing such thing even now.
I would make it focusable with just one key (F12 for example since it's at a corner of keyboard, reconfiguring XY shortcuts), easier than a two-ke stroke, and with a dropdown menu that proposes search modes (QNS, QN&TS, others you'll think of or even customizable ones) and with a tickable item for "Live" mode...

Re: Seriously like the quick name search
The issue I have with QNS is that it's waaaaay down at bottom of Edit menu and thus not really quick to access...I've got NO room left on TB for new icons or new toolbars and even my AB is only about 1 inch long so not really usable...ok, yes, I have an older small 1024x768 screen but it's readable with my vison so that's most important.Marco wrote:Implementing a search bar (like in web browsers) for quick operations like QNS and QN&TS would reasonable and natural.

So how to solve this? I'd suggest a new icon on status bar right end where IP toggle and XY Copy reside that could have some of these functions as primary/context...either that or a new menubar item for some of these things since the unused area to right of "Help" can't be shared with TB stuff and is the one clearly empty/gray part of my screen.
Still spending WAY TOO much time here! But it's such a pleasure helping XY be a treasure!

Sorry but I disagree... I don't think the solution to your seemingly cluttered configuration is to now clutter the status bar as well.j_c_hallgren wrote:The issue I have with QNS is that it's waaaaay down at bottom of Edit menu and thus not really quick to access...I've got NO room left on TB for new icons or new toolbars and even my AB is only about 1 inch long so not really usable...ok, yes, I have an older small 1024x768 screen but it's readable with my vison so that's most important.

Let's be honest as it stands in 10.90.0407 QNS is really just a tool to teach users that they can just type "?query /rf" in the address bar to search names. They don't need to select menu items and deal with additional dialogs.
To be perfectly frank, I don't feel these new additions to QNS are needed at all, and rather they are just interface bloat. Since they're hidden away in a menu I'm inclined to ignore them but if they start leaking into the status bar I'm not certain I'll be able to.
The IP SB icon already has some Find items so I'm not opposed to adding it to that existing context menu, but I think adding more buttons really ought to be given careful consideration, at least while the option to display SB icons is an all or nothing approach.

Don -- Re KS: i use KS's rarely and mostly only when there isn't a convenient touchpad-able way (same for keyboard itself)...plus, there are SO many appl with unique KS that keeping them mentally straight is a challenge for us older brains, ok? So the more I can do via mouse/TP and/or its buttons, the better.

for pity, personally me, have no value in QNS: i'm fine with Сtrl+F for IP Search and AB search(which is more like a "rock" feature for me).
waiting for Live Filter..

Re: Seriously like the quick name search
Yeah, a Quick Search Bar (QSB), in the top right corner, like Firefox has. Takes a little space but would rock indeed. Would have the same functionality and MRU as Quick Name Search. Maybe even a switch dropdown (again like Firefox) on the left end of the QSB to turn it into a Live Filter (once it is implemented), or a Spot box, or a Jump box. Not bad, I'll think about it.Marco wrote:Yes, it sounds interesting, however these features that aim to speed up the most common tasks should have their interface carefully choosen.

PS: Just saw it's not only in Firefox. Windows 7 Explorer itself has such a search bar! And even this forum. Wow, it's everywhere. XY got to have it!

Re: Seriously like the quick name search
The only thing I seriously dislike is the icon!
The newly implemented F1 functionality could contain examples of situations in which changing parameters will affect the results. "A more complex search term" sounds sexy but... how? Multiple locations can be there, too? F1 should tell us.
How do I disable the tab lock? If it's meant to be fast I see no reason for a locked tab here...

1. I like it. It's a search glass, a letter "Q", it stands out, and it generally appeals to me.neutrox wrote:The only thing I seriously dislike is the icon!![]()

2. Yep, will do.
3. You mean QNS searches should behave differently here from normal searches. It's an idea...

Re: Seriously like the quick name search
I'm extremely pleased with Quick Name Search and Repeat Last Quick Name Search, so pleased that I will give it better KS:
Any comments? F3 has been sitting on Find Now for many years... (but I personally hardly ever used it).
