Can't delete / move / cut/paste multiple items in a search

Post by KyferEz »

So lets say I search for some files matching a particular filename and want to move them all to another folder. Cut/paste doesn't work, and neither does a bulk delete. Using the right-click move-to menu doesn't work either.

cut & paste from the shell menu doesn't work here either.

Moveto (via rightlick context menu) works, drag & drop via rightclick and "Move" works and deleting the selected files works, too.

I seem to recall that this is related to what Windows allows to be done, and not XY, because files are in separate paths...haven't yet taken time to locate prior threads but I'm pretty sure this topic has come up multiple times before.

Update: Found a good post about this from Don!
http://www.xyplorer.com/xyfc/viewtopic.php?p=7972#p7972
Not sure if there's any update since as that's a rather old post (2006) but I believe it's still so.

Still spending WAY TOO much time here! But it's such a pleasure helping XY be a treasure!
(XP on laptop with touchpad and thus NO mouse!) Using latest beta vers when possible.

Couldn't it just create multiple move jobs or multiple delete jobs, one for each path? I've got about 130 files I have to delete... Windows search works to do this sort of thing... but I'd prefer to use XY. Better search options.

Never encountered this and I do such things regularly, but I usually use the keyboard shortcuts (ctrl+c ctrl+v delete shift+delete).

1. Post your XYplorer version
2. Operating System, Architecture (x86/64)?
3. You used a clean install to verify that's not your configuration that causes these behaviors?
4. Any special utilities that you use, that modify keyboard shortcuts / shell context menus?

Hm, I cannot reproduce any issue here. Works perfectly.

Win 7 Home Premium 64bit.
Uninstalled XY, deleted the XY program folder.
Reinstalled the latest release 10.90.0300
XYplorer shortcut set to launch with admin rights every time
Opened XY
Did a search by filename.
Ctrl-A to select all files.
Right click->Delete does NOT work
Hit Delete keyboard key does NOT work
Rt-click move-to menu gone.
Ctrl-X then Ctrl-V does NOT work
Rt-click cut then rt-click paste does NOT work.

:(

If I don't use Ctrl-A to select all, it works fine :) Ctrl-A bug!!!

EDIT: Nope, not that either. Seems related to how many are selected maybe...

EDIT: It's random. Doesn't have anything to do with the specific number of files selected, nor does it have to do with the number of different paths in the group of selected files. Get a large number of files in the search dialog and select all of them and you should see the issue present. One note, my path names are LONG, so that might have something to do with it. When I select small numbers of files, the issue doesn't present itself.

Yes there is an issue with 'long filenames' where XYplorer can handle them through the windows API.
A side effect of that is that in some cases those files can only be handled individually.
From the manual:

Code: Select all

Drag and drop overlong files, and cut/copy/paste them via clipboard. Note that the move/copy/delete support for overlong filenames is limited to operations on single items. Note also that the clipboard (tested on XP) will not handle items > 1027 characters.
