Windows 7 Explorer Favorites

Windows 7 Explorer has a new feature (new to me, since XP), that I've actually come to like. There is a Favorites section in the panel on the left. It come prepopulated with some useful locations but you can add to it. This is not included by XYPlorer in its tree panel.

Firstly does anyone know a way to make it appear there?

Second, I have a question about a strange behavior related to this. I've tracked this "Favorites" down to corresponding to the folder C:\Users\[user]\Links\ which contains mostly shortcuts (.lnk files). One of the shortcuts I'd added to mine was to my Tomcat application folder, to "C:\Program Files\Apache Software Foundation\Tomcat 7.0". This is 64bit Windows 7, so that is the 64 bit apps "Program files" folder.

That is where clicking on the shortcut takes me, and if I navigate to C:\Users\[user]\Links\ and right click properties on the Tomcat 7.0 shortcut file, that is the folder it shows me.

However if I do the same in XYPlorer, it shows me "C:\Program Files (x86)\Apache Software Foundation\Tomcat 7.0" as if Tomcat were a 32 bit program. This folder does not exist, and never has, on my machine, and of course this link fails to work!

What gives? I realize XYPlorer is a 32 bit program, but still this makes no sense...

XY has menu Favorites with Special System Folders(check if all system-useful places are there for you), Favorite Folders and Files(you can add here any location you desire).
later you can additionally gain access to Special Folders or Favorites via right click on blank tree space. yet you can create a catalog with all your needed pathes/files.

As eil said, XYplorer has its own favourites; Windows Explorer's aren't supported directly, although you can always open the file system folder containing the Windows shortcuts and go from there.

I gather from this page that Apache TomCat 7.x comes in both 32- and 64-bit versions. Are you sure you've installed the 64-bit version?

The reason I ask, is that 64-bit Windows sort-of-lies to 32-bit applications like XYplorer (part of which is described in the WOW64-topic in XYplorer's help file). AFAICT when displaying the properties of an .exe-file located in the (64-bit) C:\Program Files\-folder, 32-bit apps will instead get fed the (32-bit) C:\Program FIles (x86)\-folder if a matching pair is present in both folders. To take Internet Explorer as an example, separate 32- and 64-bit versions can be found in the respective folders, and inspecting the "Internet Explorer (64-bit)"-shortcut's properties shows it to be located in the 32-bit folder. Any 64-bit .exe without a matching 32-bit folder and .exe OTOH, *is* shown to be located in C:\Program Files\ instead.

The above, as stated in this FAQ, will be resolved once XYplorer gets a 64-bit version.

Yes I am quite sure I installed the 64 bit tomcat. I tried to be very explicit: the folder "C:\Program Files\Apache Software Foundation\Tomcat 7.0" definitely exists and there definitely is no folder "C:\Program Files (x86)\Apache Software Foundation\Tomcat 7.0". And even if I had installed the 32 bit tomcat into the "Program files" folder, that would be irrelevant. This is a folder shortcut not a program shortcut that is behaving so strangely.

This might well fall into the group of items within the Roadmap http://www.xyplorer.com/xyfc/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=830 as "Support for Win7 stuff".

Apologies for not reading closely enough . Unfortunately, I can confirm that folder shortcuts pointing to the 64-bit C:\Program Files\ and below, are shown as pointing to C:\Program Files (x86)\ instead. Double-clicking gets the same error message you posted, indicating that XYplorer indeed gets the wrong folder.

As for the cause, it's still likely to be the Windows compatibility layer for 32-bit apps (WOW64). The single thing that would solve this is a 64-bit version of XYplorer, which is some way off.

I can confirm this "smart" behavior of Win7. Only the 64-bit XYplorer will fix this.
