Tree Copy feature

Post by zridling »

Every other week or so I need a feature which will copy directory structures in all Windows environments (drives and folders mainly). The ability to copy a whole folder structure, including all subfolders, to a different location, without copying the files inside those folders is a great time-saver. This feature could rest in the menu without a keyboard shortcut since it would not be used all the time, and for those who would like to use a command line, that option could simple allow you to specify the source directory and the destination directory.

Not sure if this could/should include catalog structure since it is backed up elsewhere.

This is already implemented in the drag'n'drop context menu as "Copy Branch(es) Here". If that's what you need.

Thanks Don. I've yet to fully explore the Right-Click context menus is why. "Create Branch(es) Here" is perfect.

I've just been seeing this at donationcoder, but since I don't have an account there (I have enough to do here...), my reaction comes here:
some guy at donationcoder wrote:My dream function/greatest time-saver is:

Instead of just copying the "folder tree structure", user may opt to generate a "batch file" or "Windows script" that when run will create that "folder tree structure"
Tell him the dream has come true. It's already built in, only in a far better way! :D

You have to look at the New Items menu (under menu Edit): anything that is found in the "NewItems" subfolder of the app path -- including whole folder structures (empty or not so empty trees) -- is available for 1-click-creation (in the current folder) under the "New Items" menu.
How does stuff get into that magic "NewItems" folder? Handwork! You put in there whatever you want, just a one-time work, and XY will list it in the "New Items" menu, ready for 1-click-creation wherever and whenever you want.

One of the most underrated features in XY if you ask me...

+1 on that. I've only just now begun using this feature...it's a great timesaver. It's like getting a DVR, once you use it you can't go back to not having it.
