Icon View change questions

Post by eil »

i was changing some icons for files when i noticed quite "some differences" in View, between XY and WE that are odd(actually screens were taken in Q-Dir, but it inherits View from WE):
1) why there is no way to have in XY View that is in WE has name Tiles?
like this
like this

2) why does XY not correctly shows icon for Thumnails, using 32, when it must be at least 48?

3) why XY doesn't take icons of greater size when thumbnails of larger size are used?

all these was observed under XP(32), so it matters on it. but i'm still interested to hear what can anyone say about this situation on 7.
p.s. only now noticed .mp3 has wrong icon.

The slick answer to all your "why?"s is: Because XY is not an Explorer skin like all other file managers I have seen (possible exception TC, not sure). IOW, because it is a lot of work to emulate all the stuff that MS is adding to the list view in each Windows release. IOW, because I have better things to do than emulating the list view control.

Sorry, but I have no better answers. :)

Yes. But you have to be aware the appearance does matter. Everything is much clearer and logical if it is well designed.
For most users you're putting waaay too much time in developing your own scripting language and other advanced stuff. The majority of people will never use them but may still find xy the best file explorer. It's just the matter of PRIORITIES.

I am sorry you cannot speak for majority of people. I prefer advanced stuff over eye candy, although it should not look terribly bad. For your comment on scripting, that saves me hours of manual labor each day. I guess Don said it: priority of an advanced file manager should be to give users advanced functions, not spend time emulating what others do.

It must be the right mixture. And this you have to leave with me. If would explain each of my decisions I would have no time for work anymore. Trust me.

well thanks for answer. i understand the situation.
i feel some pity about lack of this "simulation".. but what amazes me more is: while i presume there are many users of XY with multiple and huge resolution monitors, none seems to have problems with this. i use only 1280x1024 but still feel a bit uncomfortable when using thumbnails of 120+ sizes having 32 for icons.

Hi. In the last the version, in a mode of sketches 96х72 long names of files and folders were reduced.

Who does not like - try to change, in the configuration file, in the section "Thumbs" the size in pixels on the long party, for example I accepted increase from 96 pixels to 102 pixels. Names of files began to be displayed as well as in the previous versions.
Result:
