Hello everyone,
There are many good tagging utilities, but rarely a goo tagged file manager. What XYexplorer lacks is a tagged view of files like DiviFile(http://www.qnomad.com/divifile/). You just put tags in a tree view so it is easy to see their relationships. One thing that DiviFile does the best is it taps into file location changes and so knows where your file actually is! You can also drag a file from DiviFile and drop it back into Windows Explorer at a new location, or into another application such as attaching it to an email message. But that is really slow and takes a lot of time if you have many files to track. So what I wish here is simply a tree view of these tags and perhaps a more convenient way to manage them.
Thank you for your consideration!

Re: a tagged view of files
I've just found there is a suggestion in the forum by Zekses.
I think it would be really nice to have an option to display and traverse a tag-based filesystem where files and folders are placed by how they are tagged, instead of where they are actually present on HDDs.
I mean - with tag based search - we are 1 step away from it already... Just need a button to switch from normal, HDD based structure to tag based.

And here is a suggestion by mancos.
My wish would be the implementation of a tag management window, that allows you to search tags and tag combinations and set folders to such tags or tag combinations where the files/folders that match the search will be shortcutted/moved to (both should be available).

Re: a tagged view of files
and I think in DiviFile, you will never get an orphaned tag, the tag tree view is the virtual filesystem already mentioned in the forum.
Tag2find and taggedfrog are two other applications which I think XYexplorer can learn from. Tag2find is better than taggedfrog, it uses less memory and handy, but the conbined tag filtering is very good feature of taggedfrog. But I really like DiviFiles tree view.
In summary, XYplorer is the most powerful among them all. I hope it can get even better. Sorry for my crappy English.

Re: a tagged view of files
Hi and Welcome,
You get orphaned tags if locations are missing. But this can also happen if one disconnects USB drive. So there's bound to be orphaned tags around. Also, constantly scanning drives for orphaned tags is not so good as it eats too much memory. By the way, searching tags in XY is very easy plus there are toolbar buttons to add/remove/search tags.
I agree not everything is there as yet in tags, but what you are suggesting is either too high maintenance or already there.
Lastly, you can edit a post and add further comments to your original post instead of creating new posts each time. And your English is alright, dont worry.

Re: a tagged view of files
I admit that it's impossible to avoid orphan tags. I now just want an alternative pane that can show a tree view of tags like in DiviFile, just to make an option to make one pane display all the tags and their relations. Just try DiviFile, it's free, and you will see what I mean.
Re: a tagged view of files
I think the feature I am suggesting is useful. If you are a student, and you have many files e.g. papers, one paper may be related to different topic, say I have a paper about both experiment and modelling, but I want to concentrate on one topic at a time, for instance, I just want to write something about experiment today.
If there is two pane side by side, on the manage tag mode, let one be the explorer view, the other can be a tag tree view, I can drag and drop the paper to both tag modelling and experiment, and I can add tags by right clicking on the right pane. when I click one tag, we enter the display mode, all files related will be display on the left pane, I guess a switch button can be inserted also, when it is clicked, the left pane change mode, and another switch make the right pane change into a explorer view.
I think there just needs some gui improvement.

Re: a tagged view of files
There are already enough panes right now, users are asking for a second tree already. Having a tree just for tagging seems like an overkill, XY is a file manager not a tagging software. The current tagging GUI is very good actually if you try it throughly. For example, you can tag items from toolbar button, list tag column, address bar and catalog.hitfq wrote:I think the feature I am suggesting is useful. In fact you can create a tag list in the catalog and just select your items and tag them.
By the way, I work for an university and i know what you are talking when you mention papers, experiment, models etc. Trust me I save a lot of time using XY doing all those tasks any student would do. Just read up some more about how to use tags and with some basic scripting you are good to go. If you need help with any scripts ask around.
And again, please don't make multiple posts, we don't mind reading one long post.
