XY in a zip file?

Post by agnul »

Since XY does not add nothing to the registry except for the 'uninstall' information (one of the things I like the most :!:) would it be possible to add a zipped package to the downloads? That way it would be something like
 download,
 unzip wherever you want,
 file management heaven
(uninstall step removed, who would want to do that?)

Also I would be able to just replace the .exe file for every update (I think I can't keep up...)

The only problem with this is: double work for me

There is no need for a ZIP version. You can use 7-Zip open the installer (exe) and extract the files that you want.

I will add that to the official release download page as an alternative package. :)

Just wondering how many of the XY-addicts who usually visit this forum ever installed or used an "official" release?
Anyway a nice addition for newbies.

This is another wish that had a minor negative effect on my way of installing Beta's... :(
I used to "open" the zip file directly, and then either 'install' right from the temp file or extract the exe as having the zip file locally did nothing for me and was redundant...
Now I'll have to make sure that, when I extract the exe, I'm pointing to XY pgrm folder...or it'll end up in the wrong place...

Guess it's something I'll need to get adjusted to...as the ideal way of having both version of zips is double work for our overworked admin! :)
Still spending WAY TOO much time here! But it's such a pleasure helping XY be a treasure!
(XP on laptop with touchpad and thus NO mouse!) Using latest beta vers when possible.

Well, at least WinZip keeps the recently used "extract to" folders in a drop-down so I can pick from that list... :)

Yes, gotta have to change my way of doing it too. But WinRAR also keeps an MRU so it shouldn't be any probem...

The only little thing that I found "weird" is this:
XYplorer_5.00_BETA.zip, 760 025 bytes (old installer ZIPped)
XYplorer BETA.zip, 768 969 bytes (best ZIP of License+EXE)
XYplorer BETA.rar, 624 624 bytes (best RAR of License+EXE)

We used to have the full package with an installer, now only the EXE. Yet it's now bigger! It's not big of a deal but, "weird". I'd say, just RAR it! :D :P

ps: One little thing that changes that way though, is that one cannot start with a beta but must have a previous version installed. Probably not a problem since all newcomers might start with the latest official release, but you never know... ;)

Yeah, I saw that too. Nullsoft installer has LZMA compression, WinZip has not. That's why.

No. When I say standalone I mean it. The exe alone is enough. Okay, no help files, but the app runs perfectly and fully functional.

But...having an obsolete Help file might be a bad thing!
We would thus also be unable to comment on any errors in it...
I'd put .HLP in the beta zip file also...ok?

[Ralphm]: Just wondering how many of the XY-addicts who usually visit this forum ever installed or used an "official" release?
I did the first time, and after seeing the betas were solid, I'm a beta boy now. However, I just have to resort the forum postings to put the last first instead going to page 49+!
