Portable question

Post by BTDT »

Hello,

I hope this is the proper place to ask for help. I apologize if this has already been covered but I've searched and found no complete answer or directions in regard to the following questions.

I received XYplorer from "giveawayoftheday" and installed it to a USB stick. I'm using Win7 64 bit. The comments on that site indicated that XYexp can be permanently installed on my computer.
I've looked at and experimented with it a little and would like to know if I can in fact install it onto the computer as an interface I can call up when required/wanted if (before ;)) I lose the usb stick or it becomes corrupted.

Also, the directions on how to make the entire program completely portable (incl app data etc.) are somewhat confusing and vague. I'm not even sure why it would be useful yet but would like to experiment to see if it is in fact a function I can/would use.

Directions on how to do these things would be a big help. If the questions have in fact been answered clearly and completely I'd appreciate a link to where within this forum.

Thanks

Aren't giveaway versions tied to this one specific date when they were available (and tied to the computer where you've installed them)?

I'm not sure if there was a custom vers for GOTD or if it's the normal vers...some vendors make one with some special license hooks for GOTD, it seems...I installed it on my other sys so I could see how others view it but don't have that sys avail right now.

But based on Don's reply in GOTD posts, it may be that it's the std vers so it can just be moved to whatever folder is desired.
Still spending WAY TOO much time here! But it's such a pleasure helping XY be a treasure!
(XP on laptop with touchpad and thus NO mouse!) Using latest beta vers when possible.

Yes, being portable GOTD rules don't apply, and you can "install" (=copy) the app forever.

Concerning the OP, please see if this helps:

I've just read the comments on the gotd site and I'm ... shocked ... 95% of the people there never even had a look at what this thing really can or can't but bashing seems to be priority nr. one :O

Actually I expected worse. If you'd see the emails I get every day you'd understand. Internet business means facing the trolls day and night. But I have a black belt in troll bashing in the meantime. On a good day it's even fun.

So true!! And posting "suggestions for improvemnts" there for things that are already in XY!

Just because it's not done exactly the same way as in WE/TC, they assume it's not there...geez folks, first try it out after reading about it in XY doc/help and then post maybe if needed?

I think XYplorer may be a victim of its own success. XYplorer succeeds in making a lot of functions available without cluttering up the interface. But new users may think the app light on features at first glance. If someone in the seventies were presented with an iPod they probably wouldn't think it did very much.

Update: I hadn't actually read the reviews at GOTD when I replied to your post highend. I get the opposite impression -the reviews are overwhelmingly positive. :D

Hi BTDT

You haven't responded yet so in case you're still looking for help, here are some more pointers.

Even if you used the installer with XYplorer your copy can still be fully portable.

XYplorer never adds or changes any registry entries except when:
1. using the installer package an uninstall entry is added
and
You check either of two settings under "Tools > Configuration > Shell Integration"
2. "XYplorer in shell context menu"
3. "XYplorer is default file manager"

No changes are made to the registry at any other time.
Your registration details are stored in "XYplorer.ini" not in the registry.

Don, the XYplorer developer has generously stuck to this rule for the GiveawayOfTheDay offer, so there is no time limit on your copy but you won't be able to upgrade to subsequent versions. But if you check out the XY website or this forum, from time to time, you'll see the advantages of buying a license.

All settings are stored in the XYplorer Data folder.

If you used the installer package this will be located somewhere like:
C:\Documents and Settings\<user>\Application Data\XYplorer.

To quickly find it: go to the main menu and click
Go > Go to Application Data Folder

To make an "installed" copy of XYplorer fully portable:
Copy your XYplorer application folder anywhere you want.
Copy the application data folder ("Data") into the new copy of the application folder ("XYplorer").
Delete the file "startup.ini" and "uninstall.exe" in the new copy of the "XYplorer" folder.

For a more detailed description click the link Don gave in his post.
http://www.xyplorer.com/faq-topic.php?id=usb

If you copied the XYplorer folder to another location on your hard drive (because you want a "portable" version on your system) and want to uninstall the original copy, just run "uninstall.exe" in the original "XYplorer" folder.

You can still use the two settings that change the registry: "XYplorer in shell context menu" and "XYplorer is default file manager" with a "portable" copy of XYplorer on your system. Just remember to uncheck them and save your settings when closing XYplorer (the default setting) if you want to move the XYplorer folder or rename any folders in its path.
