Replace Explorer

Post by gruia »

I'm not sure if this feature exists, but I am confused by the setting

Here is what I want the functionality to be

I have an xyplorer with 6 tabs open all the time, when i go to utorrent and open a download folder, I want it to open a tab in my xyplorer

Also, in the case that I am in Explorer, I don't want to open a folder in xyplorer if I'm in that window

This I find troublesome, separating between a new process, and an already existing one. or who does it.

Now that I read it sounds really messed up, Is it even possible?

Thanks

This would classify as "tighter shell integration".

I agree, there are many places with an option to "open containing folder", in FDM for example. Of course
we'll want xyplorer to open it rather than explorer. Seems pretty basic, I can't believe it doesn't do that.

Another thing (which might be harder) is to integrate with the file selection dialog box, which still uses Explorer.

I thought the whole point with xyplorer is that we can use it and forget Explorer ever existed, what's the idea that after getting used to it we still have to go back to the Explorer interface on occasion?

Edit: Also opening "Computer".

If other apps hardcode to Explorer nothing can be done.

That's unfortunate.

Maybe this means we should lobby the authors of other software to use whatever is the current default file manager rather than explorer.exe? Is this a change they can do?

Hi and welcome to the XY forums!

This has been discussed numerous times here and the conclusion is (AFAIK) that the 'file selection dialog' is essentially using a M$ customized subset of WE that can't be intercepted or replaced...there are some parts of Windows that M$ has total control over and this appears to be one of them.
Still spending WAY TOO much time here! But it's such a pleasure helping XY be a treasure!

Thanks. I don't know how long I'll stay though, I fear the topic of this thread is a deal breaker for me, even if this is no fault of the author.

I'm looking for a WE replacement not because of any advanced features I require, but because the overall look&feel of WE in Windows 7 makes me very uncomfortable (I had no problem with Explorer in Windows XP), whereas XYPlorer is markedly better. I'm guessing someone that does do advanced file management (whatever that means) would be ok with getting WE when he "just needs to browse for a file", but for me the inconsistent experience would be very troubling.

I'm not aware of any alternate file manager that can replace the "WE" specialized/subset open/save/browse dialogs that exist.

Well, part of the way that I avoid using WE is by doing most all my file access from XY instead of from the application...in other words, I use XY to locate and open the desired XLS file and thus start Excel instead of starting Excel and then using it to open the file (since that invokes the WE subset dialog).

I suggest before giving up on XY that you examine your methodology and maybe use a different approach which can lead to increased benefits/productivity as XY can do many things that WE just can't do.

I understood that, I meant I'm giving up on looking for an alternate file manager.
