Seems I look somewhere else?

In Help I find for Sticky Selection:
Sticky Selection: This is a selection style known from many apps with multiple selection lists. The effect is pretty much identical to holding the CTRL key while you click on an item or hit the space key on the focused item: The previous selections are not touched and the current item's selection state toggles. Also clicking on the white space will not unselect the selected items.

Sticky Selection is obviously very practical when you work on long lists and want to pick out particular items manually: You won't easily lose your work by the slip of a finger.

Tip: To unselect all items using the mouse start a drag-select (hold mouse button down and drag a bit), or use Deselect All (Ctrl+Shift+A).

Note that you won't have the "Rename On Slow Double-Click" functionality when "Sticky Selection" is active. Note also that obviously "Sticky Selection" will only come to effect when "Multiple Select" is on (which no known user ever turned off).
The part "Tip: to unselect ...using mouse..." seemed to say that there is no other way to deselect? As starting another multi-select (= rectangle) would at least be as simple?

I understand your point now. But in my view there should be some other mouse action for deselecting all items. The left mouse drag should be for selection, no matter how many we make :)

Of course not. Multiple selections work fine with Shift+Click on Sticky Selection.

Well that requires keyboard intraction. It's strange behaviour to clear the previous selection...The expected behaviour in sticky selection is any selection made via keyboard or mouse is to be retained....

No, in sticky selection mode you can hold control key and draw rectangles to select/unselect items.

Aah! yes now I did.
@Don: I understand that that the draw-rectangle thing is a necessary way to unselect, but maybe if the rectangle starts to select more files it doesn't unselect?
The only way to unselect could be to draw a rectangle without selecting anything (or toggle sticky button).

I fully agree with you.

I usually have time to use my computer at night, after my son falls asleep. It is hard to find <ctrl> or <shift> in total darkness. So this is very good reason to change for me
