MP3 playback problems with some files and cover art in file?

Post by JoTo »

XY V10.30.0009 beta, WinXP and Win7-x64

Hi Donald, Hi XY-Fans,

i like the preview feature of XY very much. Use it for MP3 browsing as well.

Now i faced the following problems, but can't tell you since what version they showed up first time or if they were there forever *shrug*.

1. When i select an MP3 file in the list that contains cover art in the ID3tag information, only the cover art is displayed in the preview area. No more player controls to play the file are there. So i am able to see the cover art (nice!), but can't play the song (not nice!) :). Room would be enough, as the player controls are on the rightmost side of the infopanel and the cover art shows up centered in the left part of the info panel.

Is this behaviour intentional? Can i playback the file somehow even when the cover art is previewed (i searched the "orange menu" and tried the spacebar for starting the playback as well, but without a success. I'd prefer to have both of course (cover art to the left, player controls in the right). But if that is not possible i'd really prefer to have the playback preview for audio formats and miss the cover art preview if i can't have both.

2. I saw lately, that some MP3 files could not be previewed by XY with the message "Can't decode" (The message is out of the head, because i don't have a "non-working" MP3 handy right now. The same MP3 file plays without any problem with my default player (double clicking the file in XY to start WinAmp) and some other players (Windows Mediaplayer, 1by1Player, on my mobile phone, blah blah blah).

I have not yet an idea whats different with this non working files compared to working ones. Any ideas?

@Donald:
If you see any chance to fix that i'd gladly search for a non-working MP3 and send it to you as a sample of this problem so you can debug it. Just ring my bell please if you want it.

Thanks guys for your efforts and XYplorer forever...Or in a variation of Obamas slogan: YES, XY can! *LOL*

Greetings

If XY does not succeed in decoding an MP3 the shell preview takes over automatically and will display the cover art.

To suppress this behavior use this tweak:

Code: Select all

PreviewShellIfNoneBetter=0
Or this tweak to just exclude MP3 from it:

Code: Select all

NoPrevShell=mp3
Yes, send me a non-working MP3 if you find one, please.

Hi Donald,

thanks for your hints. Will try the tweaks, when i'm at home again and i found a non working MP3 again. Then i'll send it to you as well.

XY support seems the fastest in the world. Took only some minutes to get help. WOW, thats customer care supreme!

Hi Donald,

yes, you are right. The album art comes from the shell created preview. XY mention that in the right box.

i've tried both tweaks and added the following to my xy configfile in the [general} section:

; Tweak from Donald in Forum to prevent shell preview of MP3s
NoPrevShell=mp3
; Tweak from Donald in Forum to prevent shell preview in general
PreviewShellIfNoneBetter=0

I also tried one by one (commenting out the other one). But with no success in every case. :(

I've sent you a private eMail with a link to a zipfile with 2 sample non-working mp3s and a screenshot of my xyplorer window with the non-working preview pane open. Hope this will help to fix that problem.

If you need any more information, tests, motivation, money ...huh? well cancel the last please *LOL*, dont hesitate to contact me here or also prefered by email. As i know you are german too, i'll send the email in german tongue.

CU and thank you for a soon reply
Greetings

Result: The presence of an ID3v2 tag seems to prevent playing some mp3 files in XYplorer. Can't help it at the moment.

Just wanted to add another experience: At my place XY did not say something like "Can't decode" in such cases, but died with a RTE. The actual cause was apparently SonicHDDemuxer.dll, which is apparently (Google...) known for such effects. Have uninstalled it and now I also receive "Can't decode" from XY, but it does not die.

I don't know what happens if you edit the ini-file manually and add these settings, because - in case you are running a version of XY, that supports these tweaks - the corresponding entries should already be in the appropriate section of the ini.
I'm just guessing, that the standard value is restored again by the second (original) assignment of the variable.

The correct approach would be to find the needed tweak in the ini and alter only its value.

Hi Ralph,

oh, i haven't knew this. I always thought tweaks must be added additionally if needed.

I'll search the already existing and remove mine again.

Makes completely sense...TYVM
