2) Your Windows Version (e.g., Win 11)

Wipe requires elevation

Post by nas8e9 »

It seems that Wipe requires elevation on Windows 7: when XYplorer is run normally, I get the error message:
Overwrite with zeros failed on this file:

...

Error: Access is denied.
An elevated instance does succeed on the same file.

I'm guessing that getting sufficiently close to the HD "metal" should require elevation, but it's rather awkward to have to elevate every time to use Wipe.

Edited to add: Directory Opus's Secure Wipe command as well as xplorer2's Shred command, do not require elevation.

XYplorer 10.30.0005 / Windows 7 x64 SP1.

Can you write to those files using XY in non-elevated mode? (E.g. using SC writefile())

SC writefile, copy, move and delete all work non-elevated, but not wipe.

10.30.0006 gives a different error message:
Set file size to zero failed on this file:

...

Error: Access is denied.
