Desktop items missing in right pane
I have used the free version of XYplorer for years and loved it. Since it doesn't seem to play nice with Windows 7 I am evaluating the paid version. Here's my problem:
When I click on "Desktop" in the left pane all the items (shortcuts, etc.) don't appear in the right pane. Only 16 out of 35 items appear. The type of item doesn't seem to matter. Have I missed some setting?
I would greatly appreciate some help.
Thanks.

Re: Desktop items missing in right pane
Hi and welcome,
the Windows Desktop is a virtual folder that combines 2 real folders, the user desktop and the common (all users) desktop. In XYplorer, however, Desktop is just an alias for the user desktop.
Currently XYplorer does not support listing items from 2 or more locations in one list (apart from search results, of course).

Don....
Thanks for the prompt response and for the clarification.
In both xplorer2 and Windows Explorer clicking the "Desktop" entry near the top of the left pane results in all of the items on the desktop being listed in the right hand pane.
The way I read your reply is that xyplorer doesn't have that capability.
If that capability is lacking, is there:
a) any workaround
b) any chance that that capability is being considered for the near future?
Please don't misunderstand my post, I just want to make sure that I understand what's going on. I don't intend any criticism whatsoever.
Thanks.

Re: Desktop items missing in right pane
so the only problem is that you can't handle 2 folders and want one("mess")..?!
as Don said, XY handles separately folders of "All Users Desktop" and "*your user* Desktop" which is far more useful then default Win behavior! = not all progs ask if install shortcut for only current user or all, so one can only wonder then if that shortcut appeared at some other user's desktop.

If in the 'Find Files' | 'Name & Location' tab you ensure 'Include subfolders' is unchecked then you can view both by putting the following into the address bar:
Don, how about a '/-r', '/R', or something flag to tell a quick search to ignore Include subfolders? Seems odd we can force it one way but not the other.
Code: Select all
%commondesktop%;%desktop%?*Don, how about a '/-r', '/R', or something flag to tell a quick search to ignore Include subfolders? Seems odd we can force it one way but not the other.

So true! Many times when I've installed something, the shortcuts end up on just Admin or Hallgren desktop and I've then got to move 'em to All Users so that I have same access regardless of which way I'm logged on...I really prefer installs that allow me to put it in All Users directly and avoid the nuisance above.eil wrote:not all progs ask if install shortcut for only current user or all, so one can only wonder then if that shortcut appeared at some other user's desktop.
BTW, to easily get to common one, you can use Favorites > Special System Folders > Desktop (all users)
Personally, I find the way XY does it as clearer since I know exactly which Desktop the shortcut is actually in whereas WE combines them so I have to navigage to folders to manage.
Still spending WAY TOO much time here! But it's such a pleasure helping XY be a treasure!

Oh wow, nice. Maybe that should be mentioned in the help?admin wrote:Simply append / without R.TheQwerty wrote:Don, how about a '/-r', '/R', or something flag to tell a quick search to ignore Include subfolders? Seems odd we can force it one way but not the other.

Re: Desktop items missing in right pane
Technically I could add a way to allow the contents of multiple real paths to be shown in one list (quite similar to the Win7 Libraries). But I think this feature would confuse the majority of users, something I don't try to achieve at the moment.

Re: Desktop items missing in right pane
Thanks, admin, for your thoughts. And thanks to everyone else who replied.
As I indicated in my original query both Windows Explorer and xplorer2 display a desktop consisting of all entries. I find this convenient, not confusing. I often save things on the desktop (e.g. downloads) and later want to move them to some other location. This is made so much easier if you know that when you click on desktop at the top of the left pane, everything that appears on the desktop will be listed in the right pane.
Perhaps this could be a configurable item which is set by the user?
Keep up the good work. XYplorer is a great file manager!

Re: Desktop items missing in right pane
At the moment, XYplorer very much shows what's *physically* there in terms of files and folders. Previous Windows versions already had Windows Explorer show some folders in a different way (merging the contents of common and personal folders, shell namespaces); Windows 7 added libraries to take that concept even further.blzuber wrote:As I indicated in my original query both Windows Explorer and xplorer2 display a desktop consisting of all entries. XYplorer's roadmap lists three items:
1. Support for Non-Drive Devices;
2. Support for Win7 stuff (Libraries...);
3. Virtual Folders (VFO)
which combined seem to form a likely point at which XYplorer will be extended to support combined views like the Desktop among other goodies.
By way of standard disclaimer, the roadmap offers no guarantees or accurate time frame, for new features to appear.
