Frequent Locations

Post by shyb »

I have been using xyplorer for a while and love it.
I still miss one feature in windows explorer (windows 7).
When right-clicking the pinned icon I first see the normal Explorer/Unpin items and then, after a second or two, get a list of the frequently visited locations (folders, etc.)
I have grown accustomed to it and would appreciate such a feature in XYplorer.

Thanks, Shy

In XY you have "recent locations". It's not the same as frequent locations but in reality both are mostly overlapping.

You are basically right, and I agree that Recent and Previous serve the same basic need.
However, the method I have described allows you to access such locations (recent or frequent..) directly and easily without having to go through explorer first.
BTW: This method is used by other programs to provide easy access to various files (Notepad, Internet Explorer, MS Word, other office programs) frequent tasks (Skype) and both tasks and files (Chrome, Firefox)
It allows fast and easy access and is becoming a standard feature in Windows 7.
I suggest you review it.
Anyway I will not stop using XYP because of this missing feature.... :)

go through explorer? I'm not sure I understand what you mean. I'm talking about a toolbar button "Recent Locations" in XYplorer.

Sorry of my wording was not that clear.
What I meant was that you don't have to invoke explorerxyexplorer first than hit the button or menu item, but you can click the location directly on the context (right click) menu that includes the previous/recent/frequent locations.
I hope it is clear now.

Thanks for your prompt responses.

If I interpret this correctly, then - in my view - this goes in direction of expanding the possibility of the "right click on whitespace in tree" (which now invokes a favorites pop up menu) with maybe hot list and/or recent locations list.

Sounds interesting to me, especially if this would be controllable through a configuration option (i.e. what list(s) are used to build a "whitespace in tree pop up menu").

Adding it to the white space context menu could be a nice addition, but I was thinking more about being able to access the location withpout having to invoke the XYexplorer first. Same as with Windows explorer.

OK, you mean right-click on XYplorer icon on Windows taskbar and there get the recent locations?

This is something that might get added when Don finally adds some Windows 7 features to XY.

What you're referencing here is called the Jump List.

Don, as I think you know, Windows 7 allows you to add custom functionality to XY's task bar icon. This includes showing lists of tasks or paths when right-clicked: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff770767.aspx

On http://www.activevb.de there is an example of how to accomplish a Windows 7 jump list in vb6.
