Probabbly a newb question about Rich Copy

Post by urlocalguru »

I'm new, and I under stand how search works, but I didnt find what I was looking for.

I am using the latest version of the software, and I am trying to mass copy user folders from one system to another. I get to do this more then a few times and this software looks like it would do it best.

I am running the software on the destination PC and used pane 1 to get to the "documents and settings" folder on the source pc. I then did a search that results only the desktop, facorites, and my documents of each user.

In pane 2 i have the destination folder which is the old system name stuck on root ex (C:\old_system_name). I select all folder results from the search results in pane 1 and rightclick drag to pane 2. Context menu pops up, I select "rich copy here". I then get the following error, and nothing happens

Four days is very long for this forum. Unfortunately, the developer is currently mostly absent from this board to work on a major new feature, and he'd be the only one who could quash any bug.

My one advice would be to break up your task by user profile, i.e. only copy one user profile's folders at a time to the destination, and see if that works and if not, if the clarity of the error message improves :).

Two possible problems, even though they don't completely fit your description, are folder/file permissions and copying folders with the same name from different top folders (\Documents and Settings\User1\My Documents as well as \Documents and Settings\User99\My Documents) to the same destination folder.

Hope this helps a little.

Edited to add: To add insult to injury, your opening post was your first here! A belated welcome and I do hope your experience with both XYplorer as well as this board is better in the future.

Hi and a belated welcome to the XY forums! I'm usually one of the first to respond to and/or acknowedge new members here even when I may not have a solution but I've been busy and also didn't have any good ideas...hope your future experience will be better...

However, the one thought that occurred to me on reading your post again was that there may be (I believe) a known issue with collecting folders from different paths via search results and then trying to act on them as a group...and i think it may be a Windows thing, not XY...this is just a vague recollection and not sure how best to search for relevent threads here.
Still spending WAY TOO much time here! But it's such a pleasure helping XY be a treasure!

Thank you both for the welcome :)

I did some testing on my Windows 7 box on a smaller network, and it is working great. So its either the windows xp environment, or the larger network. I will do some additional testing tommrow.

Again working on the assumption that access rights may have something to with your problem, is the larger XP environment a workgroup or an Active Directory (AD) network?

Im on the IT staff at a hospital, so the PCs are on a domain (AD). I am accessing the files via \\name\C$

The objective is to decrease the amount of time it takes to copy all users settings from the PC we are replacing to the new system. I might have to buckle down and write an interactive bat file, but this program is just so feature rich and easy to use

It seems to be a XP vs. Windows 7 problem: I've managed to duplicate the problem on an XP installation but not on Windows 7, as you already found. XP shows the error dialog box you posted, whereas Windows 7 shows a Confirm Folder Replace dialog box. Is the latter what you're seeing on Windows 7?

I have done more testing in my work environment, this is working flawleslly under windows 7 but is not under windows xp. I am using the same search options for both OS's and am infact running a portable install off a network drive, so the settings carry between PC's nicely (another feature I like)
As you can see on the win7 machine in the second pane there is a folder for each user, and each folder has their respective documents, desktop and favorites.
I can use this on my windows 7 machine and copy from a network addy to a network addy, just gonna be obnoxious routing it all through my machine.

I have a feeling this is now actually a bug then a trick, and if deemed so I spose this should be moved to the bug section

We're not that formal here so no need to clutter up forum with a separate thread. Don acts on bugs no matter which sub-forum they get posted into...bugs that are obviously such should go in that sub-forum if known when posted but "wishes" have been done from "bugs", etc so leave it here.

BTW, I see you are using 'tinypic' for your screenshots but the images themselves aren't that tiny...some of us have smaller screens so in general, it's preferable when possible to reduce screenshot image size to a 1024x768 or thereabouts so we can see it easier.

Given that the developer uses XP himself and thus tests mostly on that, my guess would be that the Windows Shell file functions XYplorer currently uses, are more limited in XP than Windows 7. The good news is that the developer is working on kernel file functions to replace them, which should remove several limitations such as - possibly - this one.

None of the above helps you now, of course; based on this developer's post from this year, the above mentioned kernel file functions could turn up somewhere in April.

yea, i forgot to resize them sorry about that.

Glad to hear a possible cause, and hopeful solution, for now I will just deal with running this through my box, may be more time consuming to actually complete, but much easier to start

Welcome to XY,

and -- WOW -- you found a miracle-bug here! Miracle because I think this never ever worked (more than eleven years!!) and nobody ever noticed or at least told me.

And the analysis by nas8e9 was absolutely right: the Win7 shell functions are more forgiving here in one important aspect than the XP functions. They will silently create any missing parts of a target path. In XP I have to do it myself, and the next version I will do it = Bug fixed!

Thanks,
Don
