Make "Edit Item Names" ignore extensions

Post by rhoelzl »

Hi,

I really like the "Edit item names" feature as it allows you to type away, copy and paste, etc.etc. on a list of filenames.

But it would be even more practical if there were the possibility to make it hide/ignore the file extensions. The way it is currently implemented is not as user friendly as it could be, because you always have to be careful about the extension: Don't delete them, don't overwrite them, don't accidentaly move them to the wrong line etc.

So I would appreciate it very much if this small modification could be made. Thanks!

So if this were linked to the "Exclude ext on rename", then they would not be affected...however, how would you then allow them to be modified easily should you wish to? Without changing the config opt? Since on individual file rename, the ext is initially excluded by this setting but can still be modified.
Still spending WAY TOO much time here! But it's such a pleasure helping XY be a treasure!
(XP on laptop with touchpad and thus NO mouse!) Using latest beta vers when possible.

Well, my personal suggestion would be to simply put a checkbox for this in the "Edit Item Names" dialogue box, next to the OK and Cancel buttons. And this checkbox should remember its last setting.

But of course this is only one of the many possible ways to accomplish this.

When "ignore extensions" is ON should the extensions still be shown in the dialog?

I'd say they shouldn't.

Otherwise the effect would probably be that the user WILL worry about them even though he wouldn't have to.

Agreed, but then what should happen when you tick the checkbox (the extensions are currently shown because you loaded the dialog with the checkbox unticked): Should they vanish? And the other way round it is even trickier: Should they appear? See the problem?

A solution would be to have the setting NOT in this dialog but somewhere in configuration.

I'd say they should vanish as long as they are still the last part of the relevant line in the edit field.

And they should reappear at the end of the line always.

But if that setting were in the options dialogue that would be fine with me as well.

I'll think about it later. Currently no time for it.

For me best would be to show, but disabled. (Maybe other color, and unmodifiable.)

But I'm afraid, this would be too much expense...
