Interacting with Thumbnails

Post by rhoelzl »

Hi, the thumbnail views and especially the "details with thumbnails"-view are great, I am using them all the time.

One small problem I have with them is the following: Since, when the thumbnail views are enabled, the thumbnail is the biggest area on screen representing the file, as a user you are always tempted to interact with the thumbnail, instead of with the small text description next to the thumbnail.

Unfortunately though, you can't do the same things with the thumbnail as with the text description:

1. The right-click context menu does not work on the thumbnail, but a right-click will blow up the image. Since left click also blows up, this is a bit unnecessary, and the context menu could be added instead.

2. I noticed that drap and drop works when used on the thumbnail. Great design. But you have to be REALLY fast, otherwise the left click blow up will occur. Could you maybe increase the left click blowup time A TINY BIT? Then drag and drop would be perfect.

Thanks!

1. I see. An idea would be to set MDBU for left and right mouse individually.

2. this time is currently set to 150 msecs. if i increase it the MDBU will apparently slow down which is bad publicity.

Left & right MDBU are not the same - left is only active while the button is held down, right is latching. Hence the context menu could not replace the right MDBU.

As an aside, I discovered that MDBU does not work until the entire screen of thumbnails has been generated. This is obviously dependant on the image sizes and screen dimensions. Just thought I'd mention it in case it can be changed.

Hm, I noticed that I was very confused by vertical alignment of images in Detail with Thumbnails view mode. Thumbnails wich not aligned to top, is not perceived correctly. On screenshot green lines show correct perception, red lines show wrong perception.

I think it will be better to align all thumbnails to the top of each line. Don and all who cares, how you think?

Well, I think it looks worse when they are all aligned to top, especially when there are very small ones among big ones.

Could the grid setting be customized to be applicable to this thumb view but not other (like details) views? I've been a bit behind on some things so if already possible, remind me how please...
Still spending WAY TOO much time here! But it's such a pleasure helping XY be a treasure!
(XP on laptop with touchpad and thus NO mouse!) Using latest beta vers when possible.
