How to view .mov files in preview?

The discrepancy between playback in WMP and preview in XYplorer could be occurring if WMP downloads QuickTime File Format parser on-demand and whatever API Don is tapping into doesn't allow for such activity.

I'm not familiar with the mechanism but based on your description, that would be a one-time thing? I've just retested XYplorer preview after successfully playing the .mov file with WMP, and XYplorer still can't preview it, unfortunately.

From my understanding, WMP does not cache downloaded codecs/parsers. It is also worth bearing in mind that WMP functionality in XYplorer is plugged in differently to what is achieved by WMP browser plug-in and Explorer's preview (in Win7). Thus, you don't get the full monty, incl. on-the-fly download of codecs as necessary.

Yes even though I have installed the suggested codecs, and mov's play on GOM player as well as Q Time player- XYP only plays the soundtrack.

This is probably because the video features an MP3 soundtrack, which vanilla WMP handles well.

If it works fine--if not I will need to re-think about my "baseline" applications again.Edit--thinks.....what happens if after uninstalling all the media apps, I still have two entries in XYP under mov? Are you suggesting I re-install XYP and lose all my presets?

I *think* that the non-editable information is pulled from the Windows registry. Uninstalling your multimedia software will hopefully restore the class information in the registry sufficiently to have K-Lite become the default QuickTime renderer. So no, resetting your XYplorer config shouldn't make a difference.

(I did mention something about a HD image already, didn't I? Sorry there's no easy solution for this, but multimedia codecs and their entrenchment in Windows is an acknowledged pain point.)

Have done a cold start-- and guess what? BOTH entries for mov and quicktime are still shown and there is NO way to delete them -- It looks like the only way to change the mov association is to re-install XYPlorer or failing that--Windows 7 from scratch ! I assume that if I back up my XYP settings it will also back up these erroneous mov associations too?

My advice would be to reinstall K-Lite and see what it does. Also, could you check Control Panel > Default Programs > Associate a file type or protocol with a program, to see whether that also lists two .mov entries?

I have NO listing at all for .mov files at the moment--however, I cannot but help mention (sorry!) that a competition file manager plays avi as well as mpeg AND mov files instantly, smoothly and I don't even have Quicktime installed in the box!

Much as I really enjoy XYP, and have over the last 3/4 years, this problem with previewing media files has become more and more important for me ( DVD and movie origination) and after most of yesterday battling, with nothing to show for it, you can imagine the conclusion that I am heading for....Thanks for your suggestions any way. ( By the way, in case it helps anyone, I have re-installed K-lite and it did not affect the XYP behaviour)

Yes, HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\MCI Extensions.

I'm just fixing that double entry issue.

Yes. I can play MOV files without problems in XY.

This might be the case because I have installed this 4 years ago:

QuickTime Alternative 1.75
incl. Media player Classic (comes with a QuickTime alternative codec)

Based on testing a clean installation of Windows 7, installing K-Lite (and nothing more) on a clean installation allows preview of .mov files in XYplorer. The fact that this doesn't work on your current installation points to previous installations of multimedia software not fully undoing their changes when uninstalled.

Sorry for not replying earlier, but your last post sounded like you'd given up. Unfortunately, the above would mean starting from scratch with a Windows 7 installation, which is probably not what you'd want.

I'm afraid I am too stupid or my installation may be different as 1) I can't find that particular reg key. 2) What sort of "enlightenment" am I expecting from the reg key?

I hate to admit it, but 3 other free file managers all happily show mov files along with jpeg and mpeg too whilst quickly browsing a folder.

My need ( as today) is to scroll through some 400 - 500 downloads from my camera card ( 4 gigs) and by using the preview , quickly look at the jpegs, and the mov files sprinkled throughout the same folder. It is NOT at all practical to keep changing programs just to view some other files within the same folder. I think I have tried quite a lot of installs and rearrangements, but nothing makes the preview of mov in XYP actually work.

I appreciate that you may have many other priorities in XYP besides satisfying my requirements, but the fact that "many" other file managers can fulfil this task is a great surprise to me. Much as I really would love there to be a way to stick with XYP, I get the impression that, for whatever reason, this is just not going to happen in the foreseeable future--unfortunately ! I hope I may be proved very wrong.

It should, as part of Windows 7's multimedia plumbing, be there; please see the screen shot.

The enlightenment bit is probably whether you have one or two .mov entries in that location as well as what is in the data column for the .mov entry.

Does XYplorer still list two .mov entries in Configuration > Previewed Formats > Audio & Video Files?
