newbie questions

Post by jon_bondy »

1) can I use XYplorer as a real Explorer substitute (eliminating Explorer altogether) in Win 7?

2) can XYPlorer respect my preference that single-clicks be used to launch programs, rather than double-clicks?

3) can XYPlorer automatically save my tabs and restore them?

4) can I run multiple instances of XYPlorer, so that each one (each folder) has a different view, screen position, and window size? At the moment, when I run XYPlorer a second time, I just get back to the first instance. I want each folder to be displayed differently, and for the differences to be remembered by the program.

Thank you!

Jon

No.

Not yet (I hope this will land with Custom Event Actions).
jon_bondy wrote:3) can XYPlorer automatically save my tabs and restore them?
By default, it already does that between sessions.

Yes, I believe you can by using different switches that point to appropriate INI files when launching XYplorer.

Please see Configuration > Shell Integration. Explorer.exe will still run (it handles the task bar among other things); also, common file dialogs can't be handled by XYplorer.
2) can XYPlorer respect my preference that single-clicks be used to launch programs, rather than double-clicks?
I don't think so.
3) can XYPlorer automatically save my tabs and restore them?
Configuration > Startup & Exit > Save settings on exit.
4) can I run multiple instances of XYPlorer, so that each one (each folder) has a different view, screen position, and window size? At the moment, when I run XYPlorer a second time, I just get back to the first instance.
Configuration > Startup & Exit > Allow multiple instances.
I want each folder to be displayed differently, and for the differences to be remembered by the program.
If you want more than one instance, each with a different configuration, you need to start each instance with a parameter. From the help file:
/ini

You can determine which INI-file is loaded by starting the application like this:

/ini=myini -> load [XYplorer app data path] myini.ini

Note that myini can be just a base name (myini) or include the extension .ini (myini.ini). If you pass no path then the file is looked for in the Application Data Path (which is identical to the path of XYplorer.exe unless you state a different path in Startup.ini).

Note: myini must be quoted if the name contains any blanks.

...and you can Save Tabs using Script in ways of a Session Manager, so later you can make usage of them again. Very useful, even when you are upgrading XY on another machine and want to preserve its session's original paths.

EDIT: User reported a small bug in script, so I updated it - and its link on this thread, too.

running each instance with different command line parameters makes what I want POSSIBLE, but not CONVENIENT. I think I'll write my own

Since XYplorer is portable, you can have it in different locations and customise those instances as required. Then just create shortcuts and away you go :)
