Can TrackerV3 be told to return Random results?

Post by frew »

Hello,

Thank you very much for the excellent TrackerV3.

It's such a great tool. I'm always finding some great new way that it can help me find things.

Here's perhaps an unusual problem though.

Is there any way I can use TrackerV3 to return semi-random files?

I mean, I write music, and I have thousands of sound files on my hard drive, and experimentally, I often find that I would love to be able to click a button and have for example, 50 random wav files show up as the returned results.

In this way, compositionally, I would perhaps use wav files in my sound pieces that I might not normally use.

Is there a serach phrase I can use in TrackerV3 that will search the many thousands of wav files on my hard drive and return perhaps a given number of wav files randomly?

Perhaps "randomly", yet within certain parameters?

Thank you very much for any ideas regarding this,

Frew

Hi Frew,

that's a very interesting idea! And very unusual for file manager, a software supposed to bring order to chaos and not chaos to order. But I'm a big fan of chaos.

What about this solution: I simply add "random" as a possible sort order for the list view. So, be it in browse mode or find mode, you'd simply click "random order" to shuffle the current listing. Your 50 random wav files would be the top 50.

Oh this would be so excellent !

I think many would find random sort order to be a fresh new and useful tool.

A bit unusual yes, but I think it would stimulate some new ideas for using TrackerV3 in yet even more helpful ways.

And then not only the top 50 would be random, but after selecting the top 50 and moving or copying them to a separate folder, if the listing did not change, one could grab the next 50 and they'd be a randomized selection too.

I'd have a lot of fun with this feature, and I think others would find it too be useful too, especially if they wanted to be presented with some fresh and interesting new batch of a certain type of file for some creative reason.

Many might like to be presented with their favorite images too in a randomized order.

I think the fact that tools like media players that provide "shuffle" (randomized order of playback) and tools like Irfanview which provides a random slideshow ordering of image viewing, etc. indicate that there is generally a desire to present our files to ourselves in random, and thus refreshingly surprising orderings sometimes.

Not sure, but then you may have the only find tool that also will present the user with a semi-random batch of files if they should want them presented to themselves in this way.

Thank you very much for considering this option, and I would very much love to see it in an upcoming release of the very wonderful and very useful TrackerV3.

Oh, and if the random sort order would be something where we could click on it again and again to keep randomizing the listing of the returned results, that would be great !

ie where the search does not have to be done each time in order to randomize the sort order

I wonder if that is possible?

In other words, I could open a folder of say 1,000 wav files using TrackerV3, and then click sort order "random" as many times as I want to keep shuffling the listing of wav files.

That would be a dream come true.

Thank you very much for considering these ideas.

I think people would have a lot of fun with this, along with all of your other great features in TrackerV3, and we'd find the randomize sort order feature to be helpful in surprising and useful new ways.

It has come true :D (see latest BETA). Just press Ctrl+R repeatedly to shuffle the order without accessing the file system again and again.

I am completely astonished !

First of all, I want to thank you so very much for integrating this very useful and very fun and interesting new randomize sort order feature.

I am absolutely amazed that you could do this, and that you could do this so quickly.

I cannot tell you how much fun this is going to be to work with this new feature.

Already I go to a folder with 500 wav files, go Ctrl+R, and select any batch of 20 wav files from the randomized sort order, then drag and drop these random wav files into my composing software...with fascinatingly refreshing combinations of sounds that I almost certainly would not have assembled together if I had not used your wonderful randomize sort order feature.

It's fun to open a folder of let's say 20 files, select just a few of them so they are highlighted in blue, then repeatedly click Ctrl+R to see how your wonderful TrackerV3 sorts the files randomly, differently each time we press Ctrl+R.

I'm going to work with this a lot now.

Thank you again, very much indeed, for this wonderful new feature !

Sorry for bring up a dead thread, but this is awesome! I've been looking for a way to randomize photos so that I can rename them in the random order. I needed this because the "random" feature on my digital frame sucks. I have 2,000 photos on it, and it randomizes the same 100 pictures over and over again. So I'm going to randomize the filenames and then play it back in order on the frame.

Thanks! Man, XY just gets better and better the longer I use it. I use to need to install tons of other little programs to do what I do now.

Thanks so much!

PS for anyone who's reading this thread, it's now CTRL+ALT+R, not CTRL+R anymore. still sweet!!

:D Glad to hear that. Actually I often see the demand for randomizing files in the net, but I don't have the time to scream "here!" all the time. So spread the word!

PS: you can easily change the keyboard shortcut... (as you probably know).

Using XY (flexyfiles?) I sometimes have to convince myself I'm not dreaming . . . everything I can think of, and many that I can't, can be done with ease with this software. Incredible 8)

I am also a music composer (not a good one) and I use .wav and other files in midi software packages. I'd never thought about using XY in the way suggested in the original post, but WOW! what a superb idea to bring creativity into what we do. Order from chaos, chaos from order, just amazing

If there was any justice in the world, Don would be a multi millionaire developer of the industry standard file manager, I would be a full time professional lingerie model photographer and Germany would have won the world cup. Alas
