I think that's good news. A lawyer who uses this version is unlikely to need let alone pay a good file manager.

News from the lab. Here's an attempt at a WordPerfect preview. Download the Zip, unpack, run, and try the "Open WPD... >>" button and see what happens. It works here.

Works with WordPerfect X5 15.0.0.357 on Windows 7 x64 RTM (hooray for VM's and trial versions ). One oddity: WP seems to open it in partial edit mode in that you can apply attributes to the existing text but you can't add or delete text. In case you perform such edits, WP asks whether so save those changes when pressing the Close WPD button.

I could bite my ass for not being as clever as you and using the VM for this!

WordPerfect is evil. Not only forces you the trial version to register online, but it installed Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727\ without asking, and now it looks like System Restore (which wiped out WP for good, mostly) is not able to turn the clock back to before .NET. Thank you, WordPerfect! I will sue you now.

I don't see any button in XP that would allow me to uninstall the .NET rubbish, or is there?
Probably not a good idea to simply delete C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727\ ???

Sorry to hear. Basically, there may be two ways. I'm without a XP VM at the moment, but I think .NET Framework is considered an update to Windows (feel free to disagree... ) in Add/Remove Software. To display updates, select the check box in the Add/Remove window.

I seem to remember you mentioning Acronis True Image; VM's are probably the preferred way for testing, but system images have other advantages as well.

Thank you. I looked at your links, but finally decided to leave things as they are. My system still runs, so I rather won't run any 3rd party tools over it.

I learned 3 things: 1) don't trust System Restore Points too much, 2) use the VM when you have one, 3) WordPerfect sucks.

Regarding VM's, if you want to use your current one, you may want to look at snapshots in VirtualBox. By making one, installing software for temporary testing purposes and then reverting to the snapshot, you get back to where you were before installing the software. It's like HD imaging for VM's.

9.50.0015 now shows the .doc and .docx files fine in preview, I am happy to report (albeit a little slow, but that's to be expected). However, Excel files are still a holdout, with the "open or save" message. On Windows XP.

Yep, I'm aware of it. It will come later. It's even more bizarre than Word (remarkable!).
