XYplorer won't launch

Post by H08590 »

I have a registerd copy and have been using XYplorer for some time, and all worked well. However, recently it will not lauch. I have double clicked the icon on my desktop and the actual executable file. I have right clicked the file and cliked on "open." I see the hourglass for a brief moment, but nothing more. I had kept a copy of "XYplorer Free" and that will launch. I have rebooted with no improvement. I am working on a XP SP3 computer. Any ideas?

Which version are you using, H08590?
Does this happen with fresh installs, too?

Hi H08590,

sorry, i don't know your skill,

but maybe XYplorer is minimized to the tray? (on the right down, near the clock)
(Because XYplorer remembers his last used state)

If it is not that
please start Windows Taskamanger (Ctrl+Shift+Esc)
and tell us if you see an XYplorer.exe running.

I was running 9.4. I deleted it from the Control Panel. I reinstalled. I checked "launch upon completion" but it did not launch. It does show as installed in the Control Panel. In the task manager it is not listed in the application or the process tab. It is not in the task tray.
I am using this at work. Could the company have installed something that would prevent the launch?

Strange. Since you could use the installer, you have admin rights?!
Which OS do you use?

You can also try the
Portable Package (ZIP archive, 2,085 KB)
Extract to any folder and run the application.

Yes, easily. You may ask your manager.
If this is the case for you you can find out by trying this:
- locate Notepad.exe in your Windows\System32 folder
- copy Notepad.exe to C:\Temp
- rename Notepad.exe to XYplorer.exe
- run C:\Temp\XYplorer.exe
--- you should see Notepad launching
--- if not, rename the file back to notepad and start it again, did it launch now?
- tell us your result if you want, or wait till the programmer Donald is back from vacation.

If you want you may run an tool like "CW-Sysinfo"
http://www.castelware.de/downloads_freeware.html
CW-Sysinfo MC Neue Version 2.1.0.1 10.05.2010

save the report to an file and attach us the result as file?
EDIT: you may want to read this report first and delete your product keys and names.
Also, because of such infos, it could be that this whole action may not be allowed with your company.

I tried your suggestion with notepad and it all seemed to work as it should have.

I ran "CW-Sysinfo"and I have enclosed the report. I also enclose a picture of an error message I received.

I tried downloading and installing again multiple times with no better luck. Then I tried the option of downloading the portable package. I executed the file and it opened with no problem—except that it was a trial version and its configuration was not at all like my original one. I created a shortcut for it on my desktop like my original one and the shortcut brings up XYplorer. I'll call this the "package XY." I copied xyplorer.exe from the package xyplorer to the original xyplorer folder with no change. I spent a bunch of time customizing the package explorer and then thought that there must be a configuration file in the original xyplorer that might do all this configuring for me in the package xyplorer. I tried copying startup.ini from the original to the package and I saw no change. Then I copied xyplorer.ini from the original to the package folder. Then the package xyplorer would no longer launch. I took xyplorer.ini out of the package xyplorer and it launched successfully, and then I did the same to the original xyplorer and now was similarly successful. I wanted to attach what must be a corrupted xyplorer.ini—but it took forever and never did complete the upload.

Now I don't have a xyplorer.ini in either folder and each launches successfully. It seems to be a file that isn't totally necessary????? Also, did it not get deleted when I deleted the program? Or why were all of my attempts of using the Installer Package unsuccessful?

This was a lot of wasted time, but I think I learned a lot about xyplorer, and I am glad to have it back. I have updated it with my registration details and now I will go back to reconfiguring it. Thanks for your help

You can start XYplorer without an ini.
But your configurations (and your registration details) are saved to such file once you use the related menu item or close XYplorer.

An deinstallation routine mostly delete only those files that are installed from the install routine.
All settings and other user files are left back.
You have to know which folders/files/registry items an app create at life time and delete them too after the deinstall routine is run.

All your settings are stored in a few files at XYplorer "data"-folder.
I don't know if there is already an wiki entry for this info... if not, i will take the time to collect all related info there soon.
This will be a combination from this posts at least:

Anyway, happy XYploring :D again.
