Rusults to tab IS something I change quite often!

Post by j_c_hallgren »

Find Files tab, "Results to tab". Moved this option group to
Configuration/Advanced. Why:
(a) We need the horizontal space down there for the new Catalog
(aka Fav Panel).
(b) It always looked ugly where it was. It still looks ugly but
now you don't have to see it anymore.
(c) It's not an option you are likely to change very often.
I was reading the change log and saw the above...
While I can sort of agree with (a), I disagree with (b) and STRONGLY disagree with (c)!  I change the option quite often! Typically once every two or three searches! I verify my setting EACH time. The length of "Name"/"Location" fields are something I would have looked at reducing instead.

I've never used more than 20% of "Name" and about 75% of "Location", even with my typical 5-6 level nested folder names. Right now I have a 6 level path that still to the left of where the right end of "Excluded" tabs is. So that extra space there would likely, in my sytems, have been just about sufficient to hold these options, especially if "Search results" option was made two lines.

Hey ho, I agree that the need of verifying the current state of the setting is something I forgot here.

I'm not going to decrease the size of Name/Location though. We need another solution.
What about this:
(a) drop that little Goto button; it's a fossile from the days before the address bar.
(b) move the search results to tab field back from config to that position.

Hm?

Good! I have some very long paths and occasionally do exceed the space even with a single path, and frequently with multiple paths.

Not sure about that - I must admit I don't think I ever used it but having seen what it does I can see it might be useful. I think I could live without it though.

So do I.
How about this idea?
Adding another tab after the "Excluded Folders" tab - "Results to..." for instance.

I'm back from church...so now on to the issue...

FYI: The reason I keep changing option is that, for example, I'll do a quick scan to S-R tab, do a scan that I wish to keep for a bit so that'll go to new tab or current, then while working on those results, do same process again...thus S-R becomes the "temp working" tab while others are kept for a bit.

Where to put it? I'd explore the possibility of putting them horizontally on a new line under the Find Files tabs...I'd be VERY willing to give up one (or even two) line of detail display above to make room in Info Panel...OR...maybe put the "apply filters" check boxes under the tabs and keep "results to" at right side? This way, they'd (Apply-F) somewhat line up under the respective matching tabs...by putting "Apply these filters" at the right end.

Oh, and I've used the "GoTo" a few times...not critical but I've used it.

No. The state should be visible/clear at any time.

I'm VERY unwilling to do this.

No good idea up to now.

Is it possible to make the "Find Now" and "Templates..." button in the Find files tab a bit thinner (thin like in tabs) and tuck the "Search results to" there?? Personally "Find now" button can be made into a symbol (like the search in this forum) because i never click find now as its easier to press enter after typing. But thats a personal preference.

Yes, I was thinking in a similar direction: replace the big Find Now button by a little 3-button toolbar: one button for each result-destination. BUT: what's the destination when you press <enter> or F3?? Hmm... not good...

When I make the buttons thinner a squeeze the stuff in between, well ... it will look like squeezed. I want some white (resp. grey) space -- "air" you know...

Maybe then you can convert "Templates" button into a tab next to "Excluded Folders" tab and then you have enough space for others.

Since there are only 3 options, maybe then shift, alt and ctrl <enter> or f3 for 3 result-destination. Just an idea.

Some of us are more "clicker's" due to using touchpad and avoiding keyboard when possible...so having a decent sized button is good...does it have to be as big as now? Not for me.

But all the search criteria are not always visible so why would an output option need to be seen always? Using a tab would be ok to me, but I'd still rather miss one detail line...27 now, so would 26 affect me greatly? Nope!
If I need to see more, I can hide the IP.

However...using a new tab would allow plenty of room for expansion of new options that might be added later, and would still make it quite easily accessable.
Given that 'Results' is something that I don't change each and every time but putting it in Config makes it TOO obscure/hard-to-chg.

Back to your comment that the state should be visible/clear at any time - there is no way of knowing where the results are going to go the way you have done it now.

Now some more ideas:

Find Now & Templates button on the same line as the GoTo button (Remove the GoTo if you really want to).
If you want a bit more space then the Name box and everything below could move up a few pixels without looking too squeezed. That way the Find button could be that bit larger, although I prefer all buttons to be the same size if they are in a line. The Results to buttons could then go where the Find Now & Templates buttons are.

Can you change what a tab/button displays depending on what it has selected? I'm thinking along the lines of a tab/button that displays "Results to New tab" or "Results to Current tab" or "Results to Find tab" (Find is shorter than Search Results). Clicking the tab/button would either enable a menu for the selection or simply cycle the three options (preferable). That way there is only one button to find space for, but it would be a larger button so might look untidy. Could go next to the GoTo button.

On the subject of looking squeezed in - the Prefix lines look squeezed in with the smaller font.

Sorry... I had same idea...then realized it WON'T work...because:
When one uses the "Find Now", one may be on another tab! Such as Date, or Contained Text, etc... thus choice is below tabs or new tab as I see it.
I sometimes try different combos of Contained until I get the results I desire so stay positioned on that specific tab.
On the subject of looking squeezed in - the Prefix lines look squeezed in with the smaller font.
Given that they are info/docum only, I think smaller size makes that more clear...

Thanks for all your ideas, folks!

I hope my solution will work for everybody. It's not brilliant, but certainly good enough.
