I miss something.

Post by Kim »

[admin: moved the thread here]

Hi,
at first I as not sure if it a Review or if it wishes.
So I'm sorry when it's here wrong.

An friend said to me i must see xyplore, he was very amazed.
So I tried this and found many good things but also many thinks which I miss.

The first is... I miss the root folder in the Pane(s). I never used the Navigation Panel. Either in Windows or in any other Programs. Because it's confusing on to deep folders.
This think let me miss the breadcrumb in the Addressbar.

The second is, the dual pane:
I miss an reset function to make the splitter back to the middle. Or an view in proceed how much it is on the other side.
also I don't like vertical scrollbars. I don't found a option to disable this and make the columns automatically equal with the pane(s).

third:
I miss an "intelligent" selection. I don't like to press the CTRL key cramped, on the Keyboard, to select different files. An Checkbox Column to select files easy and move/delete/copy, or something like that, were be very nice.

And the end I apologize for my not well English. I hope you understand what I want to say.

Regards, Kim :-)

Hi and Welcome to XYplorer!
This could be in the "Tips & Tricks, Questions & Answers" section, but thats OK. And your friend is right, XYplorer is a very unique product, you will be amazed too.

Breadcrumbs in the Addressbar has been asked before, but XY's breadcrumb is also good. Use shortcut Ctrl+Backspace and you will get all Backward and forward paths.
By the way to overcome the problem of deep folders in the navigation pane XY has invented the MiniTree? You can make the tree to your liking by hiding paths you don't use much. See this video:

To make the splitter back to the middle: double-click on the splitter.
And regarding the other question, I guess you meant horizontal bars. You can achieve something like this using Folder View Settings.

There is no checkbox kind of select, but if CTRL key feels cramped then use "Sticky selection" from menu Tools>Customize List.

All the above features i mentioned can be accessed from toolbar, which means you have one click access to them. You can even make your own toolbar and have your own icons. XY is very flexible, we hope you like it. Enjoy.

Hi, thanks for reply.

Yes, I found the xyplorer breadcrumb, but I always clicked on addressbars, I would like to continue that.

The MiniTree is for me exactly the same problem. On deep folders you become a vertical scrollbar and it will gets more confusing.
To make the splitter back to the middle: double-click on the splitter.
Yes! :)
And regarding the other question, I guess you meant horizontal bars. You can achieve something like this using Folder View Settings.
The "Folder View Setting" is grey at me, i can't use it :(

Yes, okay... it's there. but i think it is more complicated than necessary. You have always to enable and disable that. The checkbox way is simpler.

Sorry to dim your hopes, but you are probably looking for a different file manager. :)

BTW, the word you want is "things" not "thinks"...

You say there are things you miss...so which file manager are you used to? That may help explain what you're referring to, ok?
Still spending WAY TOO much time here! But it's such a pleasure helping XY be a treasure!
(XP on laptop with touchpad and thus NO mouse!) Using latest beta vers when possible.

fixed, thanks

It depends for what I do.
I did not found the "perfect" file manager for me. If I move a lot of files from many directories I use TotalCommander. Because the selection method is perfect for this work.
If I do no special things, I use the normal Windows Explorer.
In both I have the breadcrumb in the addressbar. And since Vista you can have checkboxes for "sticky selections".
XYplore were the optimal hybrid for me were breadcrumb in the addressbar and checkboxes for "sticky selections" possible.

About the breadcrumb: see http://www.xyplorer.com/xyfc/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=4617
I believe that this feature is planned for some time in the future, but there's no good clue as to when that might be...in the roadmap (http://www.xyplorer.com/xyfc/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=830), I think it's part of "Support for Win 7 stuff)...

About the checkboxes: I wrote about that myself in http://www.xyplorer.com/xyfc/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=4825

Regarding breadcrumbs:
@Don: Left clicking on the dropdown arrow of address bar shows recent history of typed terms. Would it possible to invoke Breadcrumbs when one right-clicks on the dropdown arrow?
This might be better than the proposed breadcrumb (Vista/Win7 style) because of horizontal space limitations in Win7's AB that fits probably 6-7 folders for me. Just a thought.

You mean to invoke the breadcrumb popup menu?

Don,
Is it possible to have XY breadcrumb popping up under current mouse pointer position instead of the upper left part of tree as it currently does? I'd use that feature much much more it could pop under mouse position just like CTB currently does when switching from task to task in an overloaded CPU session... A toggle, perhaps?
Thanks!

Alternatively, Hotlist and Recent locations as pop-up-under-mouse-pointer-current-location... Laptop users would laugh all the way!

I think the tweak "PopupMenusAtSelection" is the key.

...set it to ZERO? Weird... As for the wording, PopupMenusAtSelection should be ENABLED to do the trick (logic is inverted as it currently is).
Anyways, PopupMenusAtSelection=0 did the trick. Thanks, Stefan!
Oh - posted that problem on where you told to. Forgot to mention, though...
Thank you!!!

Yes, another way of invoking BC, unless you are coming up with Win7 styled breadcrumbs soon.
But, I would still use XY breadcrumbs because:
Like i said before, Win7 breadcrumbs are good, but after navigating 6-7 folders, older paths get moved away and one has to click that little arrow on the left to see older paths.
While XY's breadcrumbs are stacked one below other which makes it better i think.
If user had an easier way to access those paths (such as right-click on AB dropdown) using mouse without adding extra button or right-clicking on tab header icon (which is kind of away from AB and users won't remember this easily) it might be very useful.
