Preview and Quick File View: Ability to view locked files

Post by Plastic »

Hi,

I noticed Preview and Quick File View functionalities do not work when the file is already open by another application.
When I try to preview/quick view one of these in XY, I get an error message "Could not open file."

As previewing is read only, I think XYplorer should be able to get the content of the file even in this case.

The main use case for me would be the log files of a running application.
I have no problem opening them in read-only mode with my text editor (EditPad Pro), so that should be possible to implement.

Is it possible to add such functionality in XY ?

Regards

I have no such problems here. Can preview any files opened by another application. What application is this that locks your files?

What timing! I just got this "Could not open file" when I was switching from Preview to Raw View on a .doc file that I had previewed for a screen shot in another thread here...

However, I first got the pop-up about "The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process."...and then the above.

BTW, I'm showing WINWORD.EXE and EXCEL.EXE as active processes but NOT as active applications so they must have locked onto the previewed file(s) and not released it.
Still spending WAY TOO much time here! But it's such a pleasure helping XY be a treasure!
(XP on laptop with touchpad and thus NO mouse!) Using latest beta vers when possible.

Confirmed, Word does this kind of heavy locking. I'll check that...

It's not only Word / Excel.

I have never been able to view my studio EDL's (Edit Decision Lists) in XY because they are being written to by the edit control software.

The easy one to try is your modem log - XY can't view that, but other files managers and editors have no problem.

It seems to be that log (or other) files which are being written to by other application cannot be viewed by XY.

Not sure it is still needed, but the application is ColdFusion Application server
