Lock a column in the list view?

Post by JustinF »

This morning I turned on a bunch of columns in the list view that I normally don't have on. This made it so I had to scroll to see the right-most columns, which in effect hid the "Name" column. It was a pain to scroll back and forth so I could match up the Name with the columns on the right. Now I've decided that I want to keep those extra columns shown all the time.

My question is, would anyone other than me find it useful if we could "lock" the leftmost column so when the list is scrolled horizontally that column stays visible? It would act similar to what Excel's Split and Freeze Pane options do. What does everyone think?

At initial glance, this seems to be sensible...but I'm confused: On what screen resolution? With 1024x768, I have more than plenty of room to see all columns.

I don't always have XY maximized, so it's about 900 pixels wide. I like to have my treeview shown all the time (and nice and wide); I also set my column widths so there is a little padding so the data doesn't get too bunched up.

Ever tried the grid?

Other ideas:
(1) lock the line number column.
(2) have a 2nd name column at the far right.

Yes, but it doesn't really help my situation.

Are you asking me to try those ideas? If so, I don't see how to do either one. If you're presenting the ideas as possible features to add to XY, well, being able to lock the left-most column (whatever it is) seems like a better solution to me. This is not a high priority wish for me, though, so if you're not up to it, don't worry about it.

That was a bit misleading. Yes, I actually was presenting the ideas as possible features but they are not very good ideas... not as good as locking the name column.
Just to be sure: you know that you can drag the columns to a new position, don't you?
