I just want to say that this feature is one that I really love. It may sound odd, but I truly appreciate that the panel isn't cluttered with icons or other elements to show that the fields can be edited. It's just a fantastic implementation in my eyes, Don!

Now, that's not to say I disagree that it needs to be better discovered, and it is certainly not an argument or plea that this be left alone. For new users the fantastic look of this needs sacrificed to some degree.

Perhaps something such as this would be sufficient? I realize it's super simplistic and it doesn't address the actual problem of making it clear those fields are editable, but I do wonder if it might be enough or would it be just as ignored as the help/wiki/forum search? :?

EDIT: I suppose I should have left the Nav Panel open as otherwise the IP looks extremely long and that ? icon looks lost to the right. It could be kept in line with the end of the attributes table. Granted it's in the exact same position as the orange down arrow on Raw View in the picture above.

Hey, now that's a very good idea and would certainly help new users find the hidden info/wall panel that swings around to reveal the treasure! It's not in the way and should not be a problem to anyone...the actual text might need to be tweaked but is basically fine.
Still spending WAY TOO much time here! But it's such a pleasure helping XY be a treasure!
(XP on laptop with touchpad and thus NO mouse!) Using latest beta vers when possible.

You can blame Don for that.. I copied it from the help file and only added a "the" before "key and value." :P

But yes, a more succinct wording and a better text layout would be advised.

OK, I like the idea a bit, but that would mean we have a question mark on the properties tab all the time. Hmmm... OK, there's the orange button on the preview tab all the time... so yes, but still low prio.

if you dont want to add additional buttons to that interface, then the best alternative might be to add the commands to the edit menu. such as edit > change modifed file date. afterwhich it opens up the info panel with the field ready to edit. this would also allow hotkeys to be added for the commands, and make the commands easy to find for all users.

Yes, that will work and is compatible with the future. I'll add a command to File / File Special.

Nope, too difficult.

or instead of having the field ready to edit, you can make the command open up the info panel with a hovering caption next to the fields saying something like "click dates to edit".
