Yes, I realize that Don said no new features till Google refs better...
However, maybe this is something I've not found that's already in current.
Condition 1 is:
When I've got a jpg in the minimal info panel at bottom, I'm able to hold down left mouse while over it to explode it to a full view...NICE feature! ...problem is, with a large pix (1600x1200), it's larger than my current window for XY, so I have to roll it around to see parts of pix. I'm presuming it's set to use original size of pix.
Is there somewhere that I can set a limit to this view? Like "fit in window" as typical? Given that small images can be expanded to fill preview, the reverse sorta would be applicable. That one option setting should suffice as the other styles of fit width/height are getting too involved for this product, and I rarely use them even when avail.
Condition 2 is:
I'd like to be able to have a really SMALL thumbnail! Like Picasa or IrFanView does...In IFV, I can make it 50x50, which is enough to recognize which pix it may be...the current lower limit of XY is 72. I'd like to be able to at least make height less than that, due to aspect ratio, so maybe 54?
That would also reduce size of cache file as I understand it.
Pixel size limit of exploded preview? Thumbnail sizes?

For this one, there is something: right-click on the thumb will do a full screen preview, and if the picture is too big it will be resized to fit your screen.j_c_hallgren wrote:Condition 1 is:
Andif you dont like right-click, you can do it by clicking on the orange button (in the panel, on the right) and click on Full screen.

Again, it's just a matter of convenience/ease of use to me...I can much easier locate and hold down left mouse while over the good sized "double-thumb"nail than getting mouse over the small thumb in list or using orange option. Plus, when doing it over 'big'-thumb, releasing mouse closes the exploded view...the other ways, one must do a click...ok, not much effort, but I'd prefer to be able to set that exploded size to either original or window.

My pleasure (costs me a second):j_c_hallgren wrote:I'd like to be able to have a really SMALL thumbnail! .AddItem "30" 'added 20060120
.AddItem "40" 'added 20060120
.AddItem "54" 'added 20060120
Now XY can claim to have the smallest thumbnails!
And yes, cache gets smaller as well.

I made an exception and broke the new law, because the new feature comes very handy for me right nowj_c_hallgren wrote:Yes, I realize that Don said no new features till Google refs better...

Great! I like that Mouse Down = Fit Window! Now I can see entire image in window with no scrolling around (unless i desire so)..
About thumbs: When one has 1600x1200 pix and "Show size of orig" is used, the caption under thumb shows 600x120 when at 54 pixels...it's even more truncated at lower (30,40) so...
A possible solution: IF font size for size/caption could be reduced for that (54) pixel size...maybe to tab title font size? That seems a tiny bit smaller.
and then for lower ones (30,40), just not allow caption at all due to no room? However...having a 600x120 truncated caption IS definitely preferable to NONE if font size can not be adjusted smaller, because I can still interpret which it is...1024x768 does fit in a 54x54 thumb caption, BTW!
But on the positive side, I can very EASILY spot the group of pix I want, even with 30 pix...like the pix of house vs people vs scenery. It also seems to get created a bit quicker. (maybe it's just an illusion!)
And about cache space used: In a test of 48 pics, my cache is 96KB at 30pixl square, 171KB at 40sq, 309KB at 54sq and 550KB at old min of 72sq, so for a large folder, that may possibly help performance a teeny bit.
With 30pix sq, I also now can see about 21 files on screen vs 12 with prior 54pix so I can work with/see almost double the nbr of files at one shot...another side benefit!
What is the prefered method to clean out unneeded thumb cache files? Given that they exist for each pixel size...

So any feedback on the best way to identify & remove unneeded/obsolete cache files? Let's say I create thumbs for a folder and then do a mass rename of actual jpg files in it for some reason...Will your cache processing clean up the old thumbs? Or suppose I move that folder to another loc...I kinda doubt the thumbs will follow, so I'll have some leftovers...and so on.....

Ah ja. Cache will adjust to single renames (if done in XY), but not mass. And as you guessed there are many ways to produce stranded caches, and there is currently no friendly way to remove them, not even a button "Clear thumb caches". So far I left that to the skills of the power user...j_c_hallgren wrote:So any feedback on the best way to identify & remove unneeded/obsolete cache files?

...and if/when you plan to do a cache clean option, I'd make it as much as possible related to individual cache files, so that I wouldn't trash the "good" ones and have to spend time rebuilding them... some sort of a list with pixel size and related folder so one could pick/choose which to zap/keep would be my idea for now...just putting in some basic design suggestions/ideas for now...ok?
Upd: I looked in the DAT2 file of the DAT2/DBITS pairs, and see that it has, in text form, the path and pixel size that it relates to. So now I can use that to isolate which sets I want to purge.
Well, I hope to be near that type of user soonnot even a button "Clear thumb caches". So far I left that to the skills of the power user...
