Global settings for List?

Post by lance stirling »

Hi,

I'm currently trying out v8.8

Under Tools > Customize List there's a menu of items that obviously have a default state configured somewhere. 2 of these items - "full row select" & "slow DC renames" - are in the opposite state from my preferences so i'd like to change the default global setting rather than have to change them for every folder I view! I briefly scanned the ini and didn't see them. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Hi and Welcome!
In XY, folder settings are applied per-tab basis. Make your preferences first and then go to menu "View>Folder view Settings" and choose "Save folder view as default". This will apply the current folder settings to all others. Hope that helps.

There's a little known trick that might come in handy here: Hold SHIFT while you click an item in this Customize List menu and the setting is applied to all open tabs in the current pane (not just to the current tab).

Thanks, S, for replying.

Actually this doesn't appear to work for these settings.

Thanks, Don. That let me set 30 tabs in 2 steps rather than 30. Now do I have to do anything else to get these settings to stick permanently to this particular tab set? (I have "Save on exit" enabled.)

No, a newly created tab will inherit these settings from the current tab.

Sorry, I should have mentioned this:
If you have applied "Set home" to the tabs/folders then those settings will over-ride FVS (folder view settings). Best bet would be to close all tabs and open just one tab and make your settings and use "Save folder view as default".
But seems like the trick Don mentioned already worked for you.
Tip: if you like using different styles for different folders then FVS is your friend. For example you can have details view for documents, thumbs view for image files etc and list style for others and so on. Also, having FVS in toolbar helps to set folder views instantly. Don, some further info:

Lance Stirling wrote:Thanks, Don. That let me set 30 tabs in 2 steps rather than 30.

I have a horiz DP setup w/ 15 tabs in each pane and the upper & lower tab sets are identical. Later last evening I discovered that setting the 2 options from the "Customize List menu" while holding the SHIFT key down as you suggested only worked on tabs 1-7. When I discovered that tabs 8 & higher had not received this setting I did it again on tab #8 (in each pane) and it worked all the way through to #15.

Is there some condition or state that that #8 might have been in that would have stopped the flow (?) of settings across the tabs? Because I did both panes separately and yet each one stopped at #7. Or is it possible that XY can't 'do' more than 7 tabs at once? Obviously I have no idea but I thought you might be interested in this info.

No idea. :? XY can do any number of tabs of course. And I don't see how something could stop the flow. If you like you can send me one of your "pane.ini" files (it's in a subfolders "Panes\1" or "Panes\2") per email and I check further...
