XYplorer catalog wishes

Post by rachka »

Hi! I would like to comment on the lack of versatility of the catalog in XYplorer. I noticed that there is no "sort by" feature in it and also there is no notification about duplicate file names/items in a category, something that allows two or even several identical files to coexist in the same category which makes no sense and is of no use.
You can't select multiple categories or multiple files.
If you rightclick on a category and have "Insert as new item(s) here" and then "Selected list item(s)" the files are being inserted with their path (or even some and some not) which I think is redundant or at least there should be a user choice whether to include/show the path or not. But by moving selected files from the pane into a category theres no such thing - only the file names inserted, which is the more appropriate view for them in the catalog.
Visual filter for the catalog items would be good idea.
Search option should be made available for items in the catalog.
You can't go to a file in a category by choosing a letter from the keyboard.
I think that there be subcategories - some say that this threatens the compactness of the catalog-type file management similar to the folder tree, but to me this is a matter of taste and convenience and should be implemented as a choice.
Rightclick on a file in the pane doesnt give you Move To Category option
The splitters around the catalog should be made to move along XY axis not either X or Y. If the mouse pointer goes to the corner of the catalog box and dragged it should move XY not just up/down or left/right thus is faster and convenient.
As a whole the toolbars should be more versatile and able to be moved, docked, locked/unlocked or float etc. and made as custom layouts that could be loaded.
And why not XYplorer skins? It could be nice...
And finally I think that the catalog as a file management method deserves an equal place and features as the folder tree structure.

Respect!

8) Yes...some of us are here!

But as to your OP: The way you presented it makes it somewhat difficult to respond to it, as it's one large block of text with no itemized list...and had you done so, I suspect you might find some negative responses even though you've been here for about 3 mths...
I've found that Don tends to dislike long lists of requests especially by newer users and prefers that ideas be spread over time more...so I'd suggest you edit your first post to separate the items into a numbered list and then pick the top 5 that you think are the most valuable or critical to you and others and post those again so we can discuss those.

Also, there are some items that (I do believe) have been discussed here before so just checking to makes sure you've searched the forum to find any prior threads...I'm pretty sure a few of these items have been considered by Don previously.

Please don't take offense at this reply but I've seen thousands of threads here and thus have some ideas of how to get things implemented or done here...
Still spending WAY TOO much time here! But it's such a pleasure helping XY be a treasure!

Adding to j_c_hallgren's true words: In recent years XYplorer has evolved into an established application with many thousand users world wide. It's quite unlikely that a bunch of radical ideas will make a big impression here. The author is also a thinking man, and that a particular thing is not existing in XYplorer does not mean the he never thought of it. In fact it is more likely that he did think of it but didn't like the idea.

I would say that some of the 12 (that's how many separate ones I counted) wishes may not be radical as they have appeared before here in other forms and some may actually be ones that I could support as well...

For example, being able to adjust the size of the catalog area both horiz & vert at same time via dragging the corner (which would typically affect the tree at same time) doesn't seem too radical since that behavior is very typical.

However, I can tell you one item that has been rejected before here is skins...Don believes (I think) that XY already has sufficient color options and if you don't like the look of XY, then maybe XY isn't for you.

Thank you, guys. I owe you apologies, really. I very much appreciate your work it gives me great pleasure, relief and incredible easiness in my daily work-flow. Maybe I'm just an average computer user and that's probably why my posts often lack integrity. If I were you, I would certainly not rejoice at presentations like mine. For now I'm only asking you not to ignore me as a result, and read my posts with a good heart and take into account that not everyone has that expert knowledge. I'm glad that there are people like you toiling and making a living, easing the life of many. Obviously there are as many wishes as there are individuals who use XYplorer and to have answers and solutions to all of them is impossible. May be it's too easy for me to sit here and just wish something... I don't know. Anyway I apologize one more time and this time my wish for you is to keep up the good work. I'll make sure next time I'm more prepared.

Respect

Thanks,

That's very true, and Don's job (with the aid of us here in the forums) is to identify and select those ideas that are most popular and/or have the widest potential usage ..and which also can be accomplished with a reasonable effort...and also are consistent with the goals of the product...and some fall way outside of that criteria! Not saying yours did that but it's been an issue before here.
Anyway I apologize one more time and this time my wish for you is to keep up the good work. I'll make sure next time I'm more prepared.
As a somewhat senior member of the forums, I also accept your apologies and do greatly appreciate the fact that you did so! :D

We've had some members who, when given the same type of responses as I/we gave, get very upset, even begin swearing and/or trashing XY and then leaving either voluntarily or forced.

I'd still suggest that you edit your initial post, number all the items into a list, and then pick the top 3 or 4 items that would be of most benefit to you (and hopefully others) and then quote/re-post those as numbered from original, like #3, #8, #11 or such so that we can maybe discuss those a bit more here....oh, and before you do, do some decent searching to see if they have been asked before and if so, post links back to those threads if appropriate (if Don flatly said NO previously, I'd maybe guess it may not fly now either).

Bumping certain features mentioned by the OP. Sorry if they are dupes.

- catalog search: How about a search box at the top of the catalog that searches the catalog items as you type? As my catalog has grown very long, the ability to search has become vital.
- duplicate detection: I have a whole bunch of folders in my catalog. If I drag a folder that's already in there, it would be nice to know if I already have it in the catalog as to avoid duplicates. A dialog box should give the option (Y/N) of adding it or not.

Thoughts?

Not on my immediate list, but a search might indeed be useful.
