ini file, "save settings now" doesn't work

I've created a configuration file and each time I
want
to modify it (for example, check an attribute for my search), the only way to save it is to enable "save on exit" and
exit.
If I a make a modification and click "save settings now" and after
reload my
.ini, my changes are not taken in account. Is it normal?

Generally: I'm really a bit worried that so many people jump at the configuration saving and loading. It's a rather special, kind of "advanced" feature which is not necessary at all for most uses of TrackerV3. It's not even mentioned in the help file. I should have hidden it in some dark corner of the interface (in an interface nostril )...

ferdal, 1st question: have you looked at Find Templates? These might just do what you need without any config saving/loading.

Apart from that, I tried to reproduce your problem and could not. Everything works as expected.

thanks, works better with templates, the only thing is that the treewiew doesn't go to the location defined in the template

This is by design. It has never been discussed very deeply here in the forum, but at least there weren't many complaints either. Here are my reasons for this design:
- most of the times when I run a search I want to stay where I am in the tree.
- T4 can search several locations at once, so where should the tree go then?

As a brand new user of this pgm, I set my preferences and used "Save now" but it seemed to not save it...I then tried using "save config" option to get it to save...not sure of all the steps I tried now, but just wanted to post that I was having a similar type problem, and thought it might be because I'm a "free" user..

Hi j_c_hallgren!! Welcome to XYplorer,

I often use these two methods for different purposes:

1)
I use this option as default. Go to Tools>Configuration and in General tab click the option "save settings on exit". Now go to File>"Save configuration as" and choose any name you like. Now again go to File>"create shortcut to this configuration" and put this on your desktop. With this method you always start with the set of folders you saw the last time when you closed XYplorer.

2)
But I want to always start from same set of folders like for example X folder for one tab and Y folder for another tab, then keep these tabs open and first remove the "save settings on exit" option i mentioned before and then go to File>Save configuration as and choose any name you like. Now again go to File>create shortcut to this configuration and put this on your desktop and now everytime you click this shortcut the same two tabs i.e X folder and Y folder will be open. You can have several such shortcuts with folders of your liking.

So the main difference in the two methods is the option "save settings on exit".

Also, everything in XYplorer is free except the toolbar customization.

Surrender, while the methods you listed did help explain how some OTHER features work, my restarting this old topic was due to fact that I also had "issues" with "save settings now" while in Config mode...

And given that I rarely start anything from Desktop, and try to keep icons there to absolute min, that approach won't work out for me...

Thus, I put XY directly on my Start menu so it's easily reachable by mouse OR keyboard...as is Win Explorer...no hiding it on sub-sub-menu on MY sys!

Oh Sorry, But i dont understand what does not work. For me the "save settings now" works fine. I tried the following:

1) file>"save config as" and named it "new". This was saved in the original XYplorer folder.
2) file>"create shortcut to this config" and named this also "new". You now have a shortcut named "new" on your desktop.
3) drag this from desktop to start menu. deleted the one on the desktop if u dont need.

everytime i change something i use "save config now" from configs window. this saves the config "new" and and also the shortcut which is on the start menu.

All this works fine for me. if you still have problems try reinstalling XYplorer again.

FYI: To achieve what you achieve here you don't have to do what you do here: it's simply the default behavior.
