Dear Santa Don

Post by itsme28m »

I have a wish...

I hope that this year xyplorer has these 2 things build-in:

1) Synchronising: A very easy way to synchronise 2 (or if it's possible, even more) folders, with the possibility to (for every single file that is checked) synchronise everything from left to right, right to left, both right to left or do nothing for the selected files.

2) Cataloging (or indexing?) a whole drive, saved to a text file that the user can save, and loading when needed. So it is possible to search for stuff on external hard drives that are not connected, or files on usb-sticks or memory cards. Then, when that drive is connected, make everything possible on the cataloged list like it is possible with the usual file list (don't know how to say this but i think you know what i mean :D. One note about this: I really don't want a automatic "indexing" feauture, this should only work when the user asks for it, so he/she connects a external drive, right-click the drive and choose "index drive" or "catalog drive", then a dialog comes up for saving the catalog. After doing this, it should be a one time for saving the catalog without doing anything automaticaly. When in a opened catalog, there should be a button/function available to update the catalog, or just have it under a menu, and a right-click menu (Cataloging -> catalog drive, update drive, catalog map, update map). Ok, just was thinking about this while writing: It should also be possible to catalog only a map, or a few maps of a drive, because, many times there is a huge list of small files, that don't need to be searched at all, and the possibility to only catalog maps (with saved information of the drives and maps, but only catalog the information of the checked maps).

I asked this before, but i ask this to Santa Don now, with a bit more of information how it would work good in my mind.

I will ask my parents to make a donation of 15 euro after those 2 feautures are available.

Oops, sorry Santa, i will make that donation myself, i hope you can forgive me that i didn't say the truth at the first time, but i hope your customers deserve these functions to include in the next version for christmas or at least before this year is over

Greetings,

Steve

Well, Steve, it's time for the bitter truth: Santa Don does not exist! :P And making one is more expensive than 15 euro, much more.

BTW, should be possible already now with a little scripting (backupto command).

With a script many things can go wrong... first, what i realy need is a 2-way synchronising where i can see what i'm doing, and see what xyplorer is going to do before i ask to start with the synchronising. So the best way would be 2 columns where the user can choose the 2 maps, and within those 2 columns a few buttons (only from left to right, one button for 2 options: do both directions (so a usual synchronise between the 2 files), and another click will say do nothing with this file, and another button for only right to left for example.

I've seen to the backupto script, and for example it can't handle wildcards, so there the possibilities are limited, and also, with scripts i can't visualy see what xyplorer is gonna do, so many information can go wrong that way, for example if i let it copy everything from my usb stick to my hard drive, and a few files are the last time edited on my hard drive, there would be information lost. It can also be that the user wants both versions of a document, and that the 2 seperate versions are both needed, only the user itself can know this, so in that case the user could just say that he/she doesn't want to do anything with that file, on both maps.

I don't know for sure every possibility of the backupto script, but i'm sure that synchronising is limited to what the user can do at the moment in xyplorer with the script, and that there is no visual control for the user at the moment. For example, the way i do it now is with Total Commander, but i think xyplorer could do it better, with about thesame options, and maybe a little more in the future, but keeping the feauture within xyplorer, in Total Commander there comes up a seperate window for synchronising, and i think it would be better if it's integrated within xyplorer without the need for a seperate window. Like you could see in total commander, i don't think that is possible with a script right now, you can't choose another way of backup one file in the list in another way.

Greetings,

Steve
