NoRefreshDuringFileOperations

I'm just doing some experiments with copying many files (20,000) at once, and it looks like you must be braindead not to tick NoRefreshDuringFileOperations on Configuration|Advanced. The speed gain is so enormous (at least when the source folder is the current folder -- which is the most typical situation I think), that I cannot stop myself to take out this option and hardcode it internally to NoRefreshDuringFileOperations = TRUE.

I have version 8.50 running under Windows Vista Home Premium. I have noticed that when a file is being generated in another application, the right-hand pane is not being refreshed during the process. The file size stays at 0 until the file has been been fully created. In Windows XP, the file size increments as the file is being created. Is there an option that I need to set in order for this to work in Vista? I could not find the NoRefreshDuringFileOperations on Configuration|Advanced panel.

sometimes i notice AR is disabled while no file operation is in progress.
other times i duplicate an item (i.e. copy/paste in the same folder) and AR is enabled during the whole operation.

this, plus some flickering on the TB, made this new feature more an annoyance than an improvement for me (especially since i didn't notice any speed gain).

Hi,

this is not related to NoRefreshDuringFileOperations because the latter refers only to XY's own operations. What you describe definitely works under XY when the process is long enough. It might be that the refresh rate is slower than in Explorer.

I removed the flicker in the latest version (not up yet).

The speed depends on the circumstances. It's clear that rebrowsing, filling, and sorting a large list every 2 seconds takes lots of time. This does not happen anymore.

This does not work at all in Vista. If I am converting a movie that takes 45 minutes to convert, the file size sits at 0 until the conversion is finished. However, in XP the file size is refreshed every 2-3 seconds incrementing in size as time progresses.

hmm, maybe the only improvement is when copying a large number of relatively small files.
since i rerely work that way, it was hard for me to see any difference in speed.

i'm still trying to find out why my AR sometimes stays disabled after a file op.
i'll let you know if i do.

PS: twice i saw AR being disabled when another app started writing to the current folder.
very weird...

Hi,

I'm trying the demo but don't understand why this disabled auto-refresh on file operation is now forced on. I don't see any other file manager do this, and it's a pain to have to keep turning it off after every file operation.

It's a shame since this seems like a nice file manager. Is there any permanant way around this? Is there not a better way to approach this issue? Perhaps such as disabling auto-refresh, monitoring the copy process and then re-enabling auto-refresh once done?

Well, this is what should happen and it does happen here. Are you saying that auto-refresh does not automatically switch back being enabled?

Sorry for the delay in reply. I have auto-refresh turned on. I copy a file/files and suspend refresh enables itself. Suspend refresh does not disable after the copy is completed, and thus interfers with auto-refresh, which is still enabled.

Cannot reproduce.

When you right-click the Auto-refresh toolbar button (use "customize toolbar" to add it if it is not shown), you get an option to disable "suspend refresh during file operations". Does this help?

Yeah, if I select suspend refresh during file operations it is fine - but that only lasts per session of XYplorer if I recall correctly, and it seemed to turn off when I reloaded XY just then. So it's not really a long term solution. I installed a new trial on a VM and it does the same, without adjusting any settings.

OK, I will change it to make it permanent.

I'm only wondering why you are having this problem. Any why only you (as it seems)? Or can anybody reproduce it?
