Just some wishes

Post by mik18 »

Good time of the day!

I have tested trial version of your program. In my opinion your program is one of the best on the market, but I would suggest some ideas to make it... not better ...but more suitable for some people.

1) I did not find an option to replace Windows Explorer with XYplorer (make it default viewer for disks and folders).

2) Why not to use groups set in color filter in file sort modes. I mean it would be good idea to put executables first, then archives (for example), and others files then.

English is not my native tongue, so I'm sorry for possible mistakes. And I'm sorry if some of my ideas sound wrong. It is just ideas... :)

With best regards,
Mike. [Edited]

Hi and welcome to the XY forums!

Having said that, the major "faux pas" that you did was to make your first post be a long list of items like that...not quite the way to make a good first impression, ok? It's rather frowned upon on many forums to do that type of initial post.

It's much better to do some searching of older topics, get aquainted with us, and then post a couple at a time...not saying you should repost as uniques now, but be aware of it in future...

Also makes it harder to reply when list is that long...and some of these have been discussed/answered before, I'm quite sure...

Sorry to be a bit negative, but...
Still spending WAY TOO much time here! But it's such a pleasure helping XY be a treasure!

Yeah, that long introductory wish list is usually just a complicated way of saying: "I previously used [other file manager]. Please add all the stuff [other file manager] has and keep all the stuff that made me leave [other file manager]." :P The highway to bloat.

I am using now (not in the past) other file manager. My favorite one is а text style file manager. No icons, no other graphic stuff... Just Power of file manipulation.

I do not plan to leave some other program. I just like to test and compare programs (a kind of hobby). Some of them become my favorites then. And I think it is quite normal to see what your competitors did and realize the same things better in your program. I don't think my wish list is a way to bloat (I'm a programmer too). Rather it is a way to attract new users.

Maybe you are right. So I have decided to compact it. :)

Best regards,
Mike.

For the benefit of people who were late to the party (like me), you might want to edit a note into the original message that the list was reduced - I was wondering what the fuss was about for such a "long list" of 2 items...

The original list as I recall it contained about 10-11 items and also made 2-3(?) references to other FM products, so that was why I responded as such....as did Don.

Back to original posters question:
Have you looked at the FAQ on the XY site? In the "Usage" section, it gives a link to http://www.xyplorer.com/faq-topic.php?id=1 describing how to make XY the default...also see similar in the wiki at http://88.191.26.34/XYwiki/index.php/FAQ

Also, re the language question that was originally #1: see http://www.xyplorer.com/xyfc/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=4074

one of the removed wishes that mik18 posted was about customising TB icons.
while i wouldn't go that far, i'd like to ask for the current icons to be polished up a bit.
the edges in some of them look really bad in darker OS themes.
for example:

2009-10-04_01-11-59.png (4.98 KiB) Viewed 1842 times
My shared scripts:
TeraCopy Integration, Tag Manager, Comments Menu, Text Replacer, Image and Media Tools, Checksum Calculator, Video Calculator
only 5 URLs are allowed on the sig...

True. I'm currently not using alpha-channels which I surely should. The day has only 24 hours...

Hi,
1) http://www.xyplorer.com/faq-topic.php?id=1
2) The current implementation does not allow this to be done easily.

It was 2 references to FM. First one is world famous classic FM, that is no more supported and is rather a history. Second one is not commercial FM, quite well-known. So it was not advertisement. Sorry if my mention it, disturb you.
I did it the same way by myself. It is really was not the problem. But my wishes is not personal only. I do not think all the users are computer guru to change registry. And maybe some of them have not enough time to find and read FAQ on the site. At last it is not so obvious that this trick is possible in principle. It is only my opinion but maybe for "try before buy" program it is good to give users such a great feature?

Thanks for answering my message.

Yes, I know what you mean, and the wish for this has been expressed quite often. I always resisted because IMO a *portable* file manager should not make registry changes. However, OTOH, I already have an option "XYplorer in shell context menu" which is also done by a registry change. So, yes, I'm finally convinced that it is a good idea to add that! Thanks!

No, it didn't really disturb me as much as the long list did, and as you may have noted from Don's reply, when taken in combination with that size list for a first time post, it didn't give as positive an impression as you may have wished to make...and also given that some of the points could have been answered by a simple forum search, such as for "language"....

Anyway, that's now in the past...you're here, we do welcome you, and hope you'll participate with us...and we'll understand if your English isn't perfect...some of us who are native speakers sometimes have trouble with it also!

And...you may have scored a small victory, in that Don has reconsidered his approach to the default FM and Registry issue, so don't think we won't listen to newbies, ok?

Just to make it perfectly clear: Don L(Admin) is the one and only author of XY!

I'm just a user who has spent a large amount of time trying to help him out by answering posts here, maintaining a blog tracking updates, promoting it on various places on web, etc.
I don't even have any special rights here on the forum...though I'll admit to being the 2nd most frequent poster..
