Option to bypass display of keyboard shortcuts on menus

Post by j_c_hallgren »

This is a continuation of an idea first presented in another thread:

Which thus leads me to this tangent idea :

Could the KS "aids" that show in menus be optionally disabled? 'Cause for me, a great deal of the time, they are just extra screen space (maybe 1 to 1 1/2 inches at most?) that I have to get over/around with mouse to select desired sub-option/menu. The KS that I use most often are ones that I remember and those that I don't remember are ones I don't use...and IF I really wanted to find the right KS, I could do so easily via other means.

I just looked at File menu again...The submenu appears WAY over under the Panes item on the menubar...if the KS didn't show (and a couple of items were shortened), the submenu could appear as far left as under the User item, which is almost close to half the horizontal distance, and which would make usage with mouse/touchpad easier.

Maybe this could also be a toggle within the main Help menu? So one could easily expand or compress the menus easily (if that's possible) and it's closely related to getting help with the options/commands available.
Still spending WAY TOO much time here! But it's such a pleasure helping XY be a treasure!
(XP on laptop with touchpad and thus NO mouse!) Using latest beta vers when possible.

Yes, good idea. But again making a menu larger. :) I'd rather put it in the CKS dialog.

But the next version will have a slimmer File menu, wait and see...

Yes, it would make that menu larger...but...I'd suspect that of the 11 items on std menu bar, "Help" is likely close to the least used one...at least it is for me...so having another entry within the second group on that menu for very quick toggle of "show shortcuts on menu" (or similar) wouldn't seem to be THAT much extra...the only other smaller main menus are Scripting and Panes, but it's mainly that instead of using existing Help>Keyboard Shortcuts, if one wanted to get KS assistance, then this seems to be the logical place to toggle it on/off.

Yes, agreed and already done in the meantime. :)
About the caption: I called it "Keyboard Shortcuts in Menu", or is it rather "on" Menu?

I believe that "on" would be more correct...

Thanks, BTW, as I was having more dislike for very fat/wide menus more than overly tall ones...especially when submenus are involved.

The way I see it: I use the touchpad maybe 90% of the time so constantly showing me (sometimes long) KS is just visual clutter...if/when I wanted to know the KS for something I was doing repeatedly at that time, I can now just jump over to Help, flip the toggle, and then come back one more time to where I was to see exactly what KS I could use instead.
