PDF Preview Problem

Post by Stabilizer »

I've been running XYplorer for a while now. I use PDF Xchange Viewer for viewing PDF files. I had a problem with the Adobe Acrobat viewer a few days ago so I just uninstalled it. Now when I have the Preview tab selected and I select a PDF file, I get a window that pops up saying: Do you want to save this file or find a program online to open it? Find Save Cancel. I doesn't seem to find the viewer. However when I open a folder with PDF files, each file shows the PDF Xchange Viewer icon beside the file name. Do I need to tell XYplorer about the default PDF file viewer?

Please try this, it might help. Adapt it to PDF:

Code: Select all

Issue: MS Word documents are not previewed but opened in Word

Solution:
1. Launch Windows Explorer.
2. a. On the Tools menu, click Folder Options.
    b. In the File Options dialog box, click the File Types tab.
    c. In Registered file types, click Microsoft Word Document, and then
       click Advanced.
3. From the Edit File Type screen, check the "Browse in same window"
check box, which toggles whether a Word document is launched outside
    of Internet Explorer.
If it's already checked, you clear it, apply and check again.
4. Click OK to close the dialog boxes.

I went to the Registered File Types box and the PDF entry was missing. I created an entry and there was no Advanced button. I clicked Restore and the Advanced button appeared along with the proper association with PDF Xchange Viewer. I clicked Advanced and got to the Edit File Type menu but the "Browse in same window" option is greyed out. The preview action remains the same despite having added the PDF file type and restarting XYplorer.

I think it depends on your OS. Did you search the web for "Thumbnail Preview for PDF Files" or "Windows Thumbnail Plugins"? You should find an answer.

Welcome,
Don

PS: Install the free Acrobat Reader. If it still does not work check out this:

Hi and welcome to the XY forums!

Sorry, but XY hasn't yet made it to the "undo" world.. :(
See this similar thread from last year:
http://www.xyplorer.com/xyfc/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=2299
And as you can see from this thread http://www.xyplorer.com/xyfc/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=3234, it's second on the popularity behind dual pane.
I'm not sure where it's presently at in Don's plans.

Oh, BTW, another extremely popular PDF reader is Foxit at http://www.foxitsoftware.com. I used it for quite a while but Abobe 8 fixed some of the problems in ver 7 that caused me to use it so went back to Adobe...especially as I encountered some unique PDF's at one site that would only work with it.
Still spending WAY TOO much time here! But it's such a pleasure helping XY be a treasure!
(XP on laptop with touchpad and thus NO mouse!) Using latest beta vers when possible.

Hi! j_c_hallgren!

I vote for the Redo/undo.I think it is really needed.. :D .

I currently use PDF xchange viewer .It is pretty fast ,even faster than foxit..And its standard edition is free. However, I use adobe until I meet with some special pdfs which can not be handled by it ..

I cannot preview word and PDF document in thumbnail mode. The above instruction doesn't work for windows 7.

Any one can share your solution?

You need have the necessary shell extensions installed. My Win7/64 e.g. cannot show thumbnails for PDFs (neither in XY nor in WE).
