In http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Advanced_Audio_Coding they list a couple of extensions:
m4a, .m4b, .m4p, .m4v, .m4r, .aac, .3gp, .mp4
I'm not so deep into sound file formats, so if you stumble upon an important extension that's not yet supported by XY just let me know.

m4r Audio (rintone extension for iPhones) plays fine in the Info Panel Preview if you just change the file extension to m4a.

So my question is how do I use "Customize File Associations" or some other configuration to tell XYplorer to play the ringtones without having to rename them?

I see you can use "Customize File Associations" to configure an assocition to point at external apps but can you point it to the internal Info Panel Preview application, and if so how?

Simply add the extension to INI Tweak MediaPreviewCustomExtensions -- more info here

As far as I can determine, the audio format is exactly the same.

What Apple does is to flip a bit in the header information (as if it were a tagged id3 audio file) to tell iTunes that it is a ringtone instead of an m4a file. It's sort of like their unofficial itunescompiltation bit (1 or 0) that's unofficial and not in the id3 standard.

So you can just change the extension and any audio player (that support m4a) will play it.

The bit was Apples try at limiting users to "iTunes purchased" ringtones but since this is so easy to hack I think they gave up a long time ago.

So now you can take any song in you iTunes library and put it into the ringtones folder, change the extension and save and iTunes flips the bit so iPhones will recongnize them and play them as ringtones.

OK, thanks! The next beta version will preview m4r by itself, so you can remove the tweak (but it does not harm when you keep it).
