XYplorer hangs, causes 100% CPU

Post by Creat »

This has happened at least 4 times to me now. I think the first time was with a late 7.9 beta, the last time was with the latest 8.10.0005.

In all cases I was entering a folder and pretty much immediately typing the first few letters of the entry I wanted to jump to. Instead of moving the cursor, xyplorer stopped responding and caused 100% cpu (well, since it's a dual core system 50%).
To me this is my favourite way of navigating, so this is a pretty big problem: Typing the (start of the) name of the folder I want to go into, hit enter, repeat :)

When you type your letters, has the Tree the focus or the List?

Uh sorry, meant to mention that: the list :)

Oh one more thing, in case that helps: There has been an issue with typing the letters to jump to an entry for a while, I just never could find a way to reproduce it reliably so I never reported it, but since it might be related, here goes:
It happend pretty much in the same situations as this new hanging (so much so that I think this hanging has replaced the old one) but the consequences were much less severe. Instead of jumping to the desired entry it would just focus the top most entry. This also (afaict) only happened when starting to type (also in the list) right after switching folders. One of my typical sequences is clicking the folder that contains the entry I want, immediatly klick some empty area in the list to change focus and start typing right away.

I feel this mostly happens when entering a folder that hasn't been open recently (i.e. isn't cached), but that might be just my imagination, so better not rely on it when searching for the bug :)

OK, thanks. I think I could fix the (100% CPU) bug. Update comes.

uhm... I'm afraid you broke-fixed it somehow...

XYplorer doesn't hang anymore when typing the first letters of the entry you want to jump to in the list, but the feature stops working completely after a while. I've tried recreating it, but can't find a reliable way to do that. Once it stops working restarting XYplorer is the only way I found to get it working again, changing folders curiously doesn't work.
Hope you can find the problem with this lack of concrete hints or reproduceability :)

Otherwise I'll help any way I can, just tell me what to do 8)

This happens here too, not systematically, but rather often. Usually this is like this: select new folder, type one or two keys to jump down in the list... XYPlorer hangs... I have to hard-quit and relaunch.

Windows XP-32 SP2, english version.

I'm having the same trouble, and it may be related to the problem I have with the User menu. I crash XY 90% of the time by typing too fast. Alt+u | w | 5 for instance (to open with TextPad5) will often open the user Manage Commands... (first item in the drop-down menu) but more often than not it will lock out XY either with 100% CPU or XY simply closes.

I've tried it on four different systems and they all behave the same, but I put it down to me typing too fast.

I have a similar problem.

I cannot reproduce it reliably but it happens rathen "often", at least a couple of times a day.
Typically it happens when I browse with the keyboard, either when I try to mark items or when I go up with backspace, I cannot really tell which one. It might be the combination, i.e trying to go up before the typed item has been selected?

I started encountering the problem after upgrading from v7.90 to v8.10.

The problem has occurred for me on both Vista 32-bit and Windows7 64-bit.

I just cannot crash it. :?

I take it we are talking about the file list (focus in list), right? I hacked around huge lists with all speed and evilness I could muster for half an hour: no crash.

As I've written in the reply above for me it hasn't gone to 100% CPU for a while either. I think that part is fixed, and I would assume that the other posters weren't using the latest Beta (correct me if I'm wrong).
It also hasn't happened for a few days that the type-find stopped working completely as described in the Post mentioned above. I had speculated that it was somehow related to the windows Standby/Suspend and reawakening, but if that is the case it doesn't happen always.

Will keep you updated if I reencouter the issue :)

Well, I hope you are wrong. (Only the other posters can tell.) If I cannot rely on bug reports being made on the most recent version then I can as well close the bug section... :)

Same problem, this is a killer :(. XY ends up using 50% CPU (100% of one core). And I was quite happy that the type-ahead search was basically fixed. I'm using version 8.10 on Vista 64-bit.

I was able to reproduce it 3 times by going to the same folder and beginning to type. The folder that caused the screwup had 72 folders (each containing tens of thousands of files, maybe that's relevant?). It went like this:

- a tab was in "c:\program files\xyplorer"
- hit backspace
- hit backspace
- type 'te' to focus folder named 'temp', no problem
- type 'maes' to focus a folder 'maesydata', no problem
- type '946' to focus a folder named '946' = XY freezes and uses max CPU on one core.

Are you using the latest BETA version? (8.10.0010 from 2009-08-04 17:17)
