Locking a Search Tab

Post by Cirieno »

I have just this one question because this is driving me nuts: how do I lock a search tab ("Finding Tab") so that it DOESN'T rerun the search each time I click on it?

If I do a search across a few hundred gigs (many thousands of files) as I do every day (always for different criteria) how do I ensure that when I return to this tab I don't have to wait another x amount of time for it to do the search all over again, in the process losing my focused location and everything else? Why would anyone think that this was ever a good idea?? It's not as if the results have changed between one minute and the next, so why force a re-indexing?! At the very least, make it optional...

So: how do I make a search just be a one-off search that I can return to and refer to easily?

i) BTW, I did search the forum for "finding tabs" but the search facility helpfully decided to ignore the word "tab" despite telling it to search for the whole phrase, and 19 pages of the word "finding" was too much to wade through, sorry...
ii) For the record, I am a lifetime licencee.

Welcome to the forums!

You may have had better lucky referring to it as "search results" when searching the forums, as this has been discussed a few times.

Currently, it's not possible, but it has been creeping up Don's roadmap. I believe it was done this way because the results very well may have changed between one minute and the next, so this ensures it is kept up to date and as accurate as possible.

One way to work around this is to use dual panes such that the active tab of one pane is the search results, and then you can do all your work in the other pane. You can even switch between panes in this case without it refreshing the results, even if that pane isn't visible. It's not a perfect solution but it works well enough for now.
