A touch OT: License Lounge

Post by admin »

Lastly I have the impression that more cracks of XY are around, the serials and cracks are published faster and wider -- I guess thanks to web 2.0, blogging, twitter and what not --, and very likely a larger percentage of users than ever before use a serial/crack instead of giving me money.

I thought about that and decided to give more to the people that pay. My idea is a "License Lounge" -- that's a protected exclusive area of the XYplorer homepage that's only reachable to registered users. The magic XYdentity number that each paying customer receives finally comes into play!

In the "License Lounge" you will have access to PDF-help, cheat sheets, and other useful stuff which I will take out of the public area soon. I will as well move the BETA-version download into that section!

I'd like to hear some suggestions for how to call this area! Or is "License Lounge" after all a good name?

 That's REALLY unfortunate but guess there's not much that can be done to prevent it...

Yes, that's a good idea, I think! Other vendors have done similar, I believe...but won't your XYdentity nbr then get cracked by same crooks?

This could become a minor possible flaw, as a potential new purchaser may need a beta(s) to fix a particular issue that they are having before they are convinced to buy...and having to deal on-on-one with them is a bit too much manual overhead...maybe there could be some sort of a very time-limited access for this situation?

That name is more similar to what some forums have for off-topic (ie whatever goes) conversations...I'd maybe suggest a more typical "Members Only" or how about "XYecutive Club"? (Playing off the "Executive" term)..
Still spending WAY TOO much time here! But it's such a pleasure helping XY be a treasure!
(XP on laptop with touchpad and thus NO mouse!) Using latest beta vers when possible.

As much as it warms my heart to see that you're looking to provide a better value to us, customers who paid, I cannot help but to be worried about this idea.

Let's take a look at the numbers. We don't know how many licensees Don has, so we'll have to go by the forum totals. There are 4 people whose post counts are over a thousand, 37 people who have 100+ posts and 709 people whose post count is below 10. If there isn't a great number of people who get involved in the forums then will thousands of XYplorer purchasers take advantage of this VIP club? I'm very sceptical that they will.

If there's stuff in the public area and you'll take it out of it chances are that by the time you do non-paying people would have read your post and rushed off to download it. Likewise, as JC pointed out, cutting off the beta access could lead to people having issues in their trial.

It also raises a question about people who have Standard licenses. Will their access be limited according the duration of their license?

This is a treacherous territory and I hope that you'll tread carefully :)

Summary answer:

1. I will call it license lounge.

2. No, the license lounge access cannot be hacked. The XYplorer license key is a smart beast. There's a difference between a hacked key and a genuine key, and this difference will come into play now. Crack-users will have to stay outside.

3. Well, it's an experiment. Psychology: It's not so much what you get, or whether you actually go there to get it, but it's the idea that you can get more if you pay that will convince a certain type of people, people that have the money but not the character to resist using a free serial. I think they also don't have the character to resist the license lounge!

4. I'm aware that there might be drawbacks with locking in the BETA versions. I think about it.

I noticed that in the description on that page it says "Tip of the Day updates, and the Detailed Change Log."...which has me wondering for a couple of reasons...since via the "whatsnew" page, there is a link to "http://www.xyplorer.com/download/History.txt"...is that what you are referring to?

The other bigger issue concerns how it may affect my blog where I copy your change logs for the main benefit of giving XY more exposure but also so that users may get these via email if they wish which isn't available via the forum...ok, so I don't have THAT many subscribers but I've got enough to make it worthwhile for me to continue it, and it also makes searching for a particular change much easier as you're limited to only those entries.

Change Log: yep, right. I'll change that.

Your Blog: No problem, it will increase the value of the blog.

FYI, the lic lounge now remembers you within the browsing session, so you need to log in only once. :)

To my opinion the beta versions should only be available for licensed users.
To tell the truth i had been a cheater for a while and the beta build was to easy to get, i had nothing to do to get fully working new versions ....
Right now i am amazed by the work Don puts into XYplorer, and it just makes me sick to see how easily you can get it.

Exclusive area for registered users sounds good to me. I will check out the lounge section.

I think it has been a bit of an anti-climatic launch. Don put things that were in the public domain before into the Lounge and then went on holiday so no more additions until he gets back
