'hide files' option

Post by lastnikita »

Currently there is 'hide folders' but I couldn't locate any 'hide files'..
no big deal, but I'm sure it could be useful for who don't use the 'keep folders at top' option ! I could also use it from time to time on very large directories (+500 files), when it becomes hard to operate the scrollbar.

I also suggest to offer bigger icons for the toolbar, they are so tiny :)

Ok...it took me a bit of time to figure out how to hide files in a folder but show the sub-folders, but I think the following will work for most cases:

Use a Visual Filter (which are documented in http://88.191.26.34/XYwiki/index.php/Visual_Filter) of the following

Code: Select all

!*.*
Now if there are any files without an extension, which is typically unusual, they will still show....so it's not perfect, but may do for now.

I couldn't recall any other existing way to do it...but then, I've not had a reason to do so either.

-------------
Now regarding larger icons: Personally I find the existing icons large enough and I'm having some serious vison issues, but that's just my opinion...and given the amount of icons I have in TB, there is just no room for bigger ones...

However, I did find the following prior threads:
http://www.xyplorer.com/xyfc/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=1621
http://www.xyplorer.com/xyfc/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=2429
and based on the 2nd one, which is somewhat recent, it doesn't look like it will happen.

Thanks I didn't think of this solution :)
And thanks for the other topics too, I'll post over there..
tried to search in the forum but I guess my "bigger icons" keywords were not the best

Cheers

Like I wrote, it's not perfect if you have actual files that don't have any "." but I only have a few of them on my sys...mostly from GPL/Linux created setups....not sure if this/your situation/request is common enough to warrant a new option given this workaround.

I searched for "toolbar icons" in the "first post of thread" and in thread title.

I only have few files without extension, and would have only a few uses for that function anyway, so it will fill the job perfectly :)

To show only folders, try Visual Filter

Code: Select all

\|!*

After having imagined that VF (I don't know whether it works in all conditions), I noticed that such a string "\|!*" is not talking clear for everybody, particularly myself.
So I wondered how to indicate somewhere that this string is a VF to "Hide files" or to "Show only folders". Is it possible e.g. in List management to name (give a human name) to the VFs ? In List management, in Edit mode, I tried

Code: Select all

\|!*, Hide files
but without success.
If not, I'd whish that would be possible later. I'm sorry if that request has already been asked, but I didn't find it in the forum.

I tried a few variants, including a couple with "\|" but didn't try that one! Oh well!

Favorite Folders support captions. Using List Management, you can add it to your favorites like this:

Code: Select all

"Hide All Files" |\|!*

...or put it in the catalog as a GoTo item with Caption: "Folder only", Location: "|\|!*"
I got a whole catalog category with VF.

hum, something's wrong...
well I thought the other solution was ok, but it's not.
the problem is not files without extension, the real problem is when a folder has a dot into its name, it gets hidden.

Then I tried this other one and it hides the folders too on my computer.
Could someone briefly explain it to me ? \|!*
I get the !* different of anything but I don't understand the rest..

This syntax was introduced only a few days ago based on a idea of TheQuerty: http://www.xyplorer.com/xyfc/viewtopic.php?t=3300
Basically it was added to apply a VF only to files and still show all folders.
So in this case it shows all folders and hides the rest (which works for me btw ... :? )

that was it, works fine with latest build, thanks.
would be cool to be able to name them, I'll check the catalog option meanwhile..
last one, any syntax for hiding folder this way please ?
(so I can group all of those under catalog)
