Mty wish: FAI (File Artificial Intelligence)

Post by Telemacus »

We all work with LOTS of files, don't we? that's why we need a file manager.
I'd like to be able to tag files according to priorities. I wish those files "would get back to me" somehow, instead of me having to track them down and chase them, because after a while, when you work with hundreds, it's simply impossible.
So, my wishlist is a to add the ability to tag files (I know colors can be defined already, but file coloring is already a method used to classify files visually) AND, when you tag them, add some kind of reminder feature, so that the files would pop up to me after a given period of time (which the user can define). with a message like "you've gotta do something with me!" :) or something to that effect.
Maybe even make it a little more advanced and let users define what the file does when the date and time you have comes: it it's a .doc file, open itself in your word program, etc. etc.

Hi and welcome to the XY forums!

It seems your wish is possibly a variant of "file comments" as discussed here as latest thread http://www.xyplorer.com/xyfc/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=2857.

However, I also suspect your idea is maybe a bit too advanced/complicated for a file manager and falls more into the generic category of a task scheduler app.
Still spending WAY TOO much time here! But it's such a pleasure helping XY be a treasure!
(XP on laptop with touchpad and thus NO mouse!) Using latest beta vers when possible.

jacky is probably able to write a script that does this kind of thing... (I'm serious!)

Other than that: not planned. File tagging using NTFS streams (which I once had planned to do) is not reliable anymore; Vista has shown what MS is able to, uhm, do.
