Search results tab - Locking tab

Hi,

Okay little question, could there be a way to make the SR (Search results) tab a SR tab only ?
I mean, when I do a search I got my results on the SR tab, but sometimes I then need to go to a specific folder, and forgot to change tab (and, obviously, I didn't want to "loose" the results)

I'd like that when clicking on the treeview it would open the folder on a new tab instead of the SR one. Could be working that way only if the tab if called "Search results" for example.
Or, even better, in the tab menu (right click on the tab) add an option "Lock the tab" (remembered from sessions to sessions) which would means it cannot change its current folder (or ask when it's about to do so, like "Tab is locked, change folder anyway or open a new tab ?"). That way we could even "lock" some personal tabs, which I think can be usefull.
What do you guys think?


Also, on another note, makes me think that I'd like a new option in search results, probably on the right-click menu: Either "Goto file" and "Goto path", so in one click we can go to the file we just found

This is already possible by keyboard: Ctrl+arrowleft. But, agreed, I'll add it to the menu, too.

Well, actually my idea of "locking tab" wasn't regarding their closing, but changing location. Which can't work with the Home setting as having a Home set doesn't mean you don't want to (be able to) change location.
What I was thinking is when a tab is locked, and you try to change location, it will ask you "Tab is locked, change location anyway or open in a new tab ?" That way if you forgot to create a new tab to move where you wanna go, just say "open in a new tab"; or you can say "do it anyway" which would unlock the tab

That said, the "are you sure?" when closing a tab with Home can be a good idea, since once its done we loose all its settings (location, column, etc) right?

Well, you don't have to lock your tabs
And it could be usefull (I think) if there's a place you don't want to leave, like cause you have a lot of files in that folder, you have set up the sort order, you are somewhere in the filelist, working of files, and when you click on another folder you don't want to loose all that or anything.
Or, why i thought of this in the first place, because you're in some search results and don't want to "leave" that place. So with the locking thing you're safe (plus, you can then use the "Goto file" option in another tab, right now you can't)

You wouldn't be punished for trying to go somewhere, but reminded that you locked the tab, which meant you didn't wanna go somewhere from here
(if you don't like dialog boxes, they don't do them always use a new tab if the current one is locked)

Yes.
For me personal it would be great if I click in the tree list, a new window opens up instead of writing over the search result.

I'm still not convinced. I rather think the whole locking business is already covered in a more elegant and user-friendly way by the "Home" concept. Instead of locking it you home it: now you are not limited in your moves but able to jump back to that special location/setup by a simple F6.

Maybe in the case of the SR tab, going home (F6) could be predefined as going back to the last search results. Good idea?

Depending how you implement F6 for the SR tab. If F6 make the search again, then the user will not gain anyhing new, iill be same as pressing Find Now again.

I still think that the result in the SR tab should locked and when clicking on a folder in the SR tab a new tab is open and gain focus.

I agree with you that locking the other folders is not necassary. As you say, it is solved with set home.

Well, I think there's a difference between thoose 2 ways, that is when you home a location you aim to be able to get back there, while when you lock a tab you intend to let it open.
Which means, I would lock a tab because I need it open, so when I go somewhere else my 1st location is stil open. If it was "homed", I could go back there, but I couldn't have the two open. Or, I'd have to then open a new tab at the same location I've end up before I go home.
It's not the same. And actually I realised that I guess most tabbed-browser have this function, to be able to lock a tab, which means the same: you want to make sure it won't be closed or go somewhere else, you want it to stay where it is. So I think users could get/use this locking idea pretty easilly, and without feeling limited in their moves, which seems to bother you. I mean yeah it's a "limitation", but one you ask for, one you're looking for. (you know, like, when you set a file ReadOnly. Sure it's a limitation, but one you ask for.)

Besides, it means that, esp. for search results, the filelist has to be reloaded each time, which might not be the best. And if a SR gave you a list, and I want to use the "goto file" for a few of them, all in different places, I'd have to do goto file; open in a new tab, back home, and then do it all again... while with the locking the goto file will directly go in a new tab.
(that would also make the SR tab a tab with always only a search results listing, which makes more sense to me)

Well the whole "locking tabs" business rings a bell with me. It's quite an old wish of mine - actually that old, I couldn't even find the original post anymore, he he.
I'm still convinced it would help in certain circumstances to be able to lock a tab with all its settings - which is a completely different thing than the new "Are you sure"-messages.

I still vote for "lockable tabs".

It could be just an additional switch when homing a tab. (e.g. "Lock Home")

Summary answer to the locking craze:

Status quo: I'm not convinced but I will meditate about it. I especially dislike the idea of auto-opening a new tab when clicking a tree node. I do see some benefit in keeping the SR tab "locked". Remember, however, since TV3 doesn't cache anything but always serves fresh live information, selecting an "old" search results listing will always re-run the search!
