Setting a sort method for a folder

Hi !

One thing that would be helpful would be to have the capability to set a sort for a particular folder.

For example, I generally use a certain folder for downloading items (like the latest version of TrackerV3). In that folder, I always want it sorted by DATE descending, so that the latest downloaded item is at the top.

For other folders, it's more helpful to have it sorted by name or by size.

So, if there is the possibility of making the sort method saved for a partcular folder, that would be helpful.

One possible method - perhaps allow the user to have 2 or 3 folders where they can specify and save a sort method, and then all others would be the default method.

That's a typical tab-job! Every tab remembers its own sort order, so make a new tab, point it to your download folder, sort it by date descending, and you're done. If you really mean it you could even rename it to "Download" and store the configuration ("Set Home...") so that you can always restore your settings by F6 ("Go Home") in case you lost them.

I tried it - it is pretty good... except that once the tab is closed, it's all lost.

So, what would be needed (to accomplish the saving of settings for a folder using tabs) would be a way to save tabs and their settings.

Which means, all that has been done is to put the same task off into a different concept ("tab" instead of "folder").

Well, I don't know. What's so hard about clicking a column header to sort a list? What's so hard about not closing a tab? I don't see the gain in adding just another layer of abstraction, apart from a gain in complication.
Let's keep it simple.

The column header is often off the screeen, to the right.

Not closing a tab may be reasonable - it's just a question of how many different folders need to have non-default settings - I'm not sure at the moment.

Actually, the reason I was looking for TrackerV3 was the need for a larger font due to onset of farsightedness.

This larger font pushes some things off the screen to the right.

Given the number of pieces of information, there is always some column off the screen.

OK, I see and share your problem. But even if sorting would be stored with a folder: as long as the sorted column is off the screen, you cannot be sure about the sorting (at least me as a control freak I like to see it rather than believe it, or even remember it).
So, what we really need would be a sort-by-column-interface that's always visible (even if the columns aren't). Any ideas anybody? There is the Sort By menu under the View menu; that's an alternative, but not the quickest one.
