Disallow dragging (extend this option)

Post by ReviewPilot »

Hey,
How about adding a checker for "Disallow LMB-dragging from tree and list"

Accidental Moves of Files/Folders sometimes happen when using Left Mouse Button in XY, so I don't need it for Copying/Moving.
I almost always use RMB instead, as it asks me before action is triggered.
I would be happy if I could lock LMB dragging, but not RMB

Makes sense. I wonder if I should simply change the existing option and confine it to LMB?!

No, please don't disallow LMB dragging. If you made up your mind, maybe a tweak for LMB draggers??

No, I mean: If you enable that option then only LMB dragging is disabled; RMB dragging is never disabled.

Oh I see, that makes sense. Its very rare that right-click drag will cause accidental moving of items, even if so context menu will pop-up which is an additional safety belt. So that change makes total sense, fine with me.

Would anyone like it if instead of disabling LMB dragging, it would either switch both operations, so left-dragging pop up the menu while right-dragging is "direct", or just turn the left-dragging into the right one. Meaning, all left-dragging would pop up the menu, while right-dragging would be disabled (or do the exact same thing) ?

I personally use LMB for copy and moving of files and directories.
Therefore I prefer if it is an option to enable/disable LMB dragging.

So my vote is keep the LMB dragging and add an option to enabled/disable the dragging.

While I can understand the idea behind this, I think it would be a bit too non-standard, so I think having a tweak to disable LMB as discussed make the most sense at this point...Personally, I attempt to use RMB for this as much as possible because I've made some mistakes using LMB while RMB makes it very clear what is occuring.
Still spending WAY TOO much time here! But it's such a pleasure helping XY be a treasure!
(XP on laptop with touchpad and thus NO mouse!) Using latest beta vers when possible.

Don,
has this been implemented?

I would see it as sub-checkbox under config
- disallow dragging from tree and list
---- only RMB dragging allowed

You mean to disable right-dragging? No, not possible. But you can disallow left-dragging of course: "Disallow dragging from tree and list" on Configuration - General

Ouh
Couldn't it be helpful if the word left would be found in the description of this option?

Now, that I know, I found the hint for left in the tooltip :(
- but I didn't before, as I didn't expect

Well, no caption is as explicit as it could be. A caption has other important functions like being short, catchy, and distinctive of other captions. For deeper info: Consult the manual -- do it once and you know it's left dragging and also understand why it's only left dragging, and you'll never forget and are thankful that you don't have to read the now superfluous word "left" each time.

No doubt - that's right.

I don't believe this. I think that every time a program is "intuitive" enough to do something without reading help is very good and helpful.
So I'd prefer to read 10 times a year the word left before once reading help.

And especially in this situation: the caption says "Disallow dragging from tree and list". This seems to be very understandable - and means I have no interest: I want to drag! So I seem to have no reason to look into help. And miss the importand fact.
If I had to await this - I had to verify the exact meaning of every command / function in help before using.

So if a caption has a complex meaning, I'll study help if I'm interested. If it seems to be unambiguous, I won't.

OK - that's my way to think about it.

I just saw that the function changed quite recently:

Code: Select all

v7.80.0005 - 2008-11-13 09:09
    * Configuration | General | Disallow dragging from tree and list:
From now on, this setting only affects dragging with the *left*
mouse button. The right button is always available for dragging.
So, OK, the current caption has historical reasons and I probably would have named it "Disallow left-dragging from tree and list" if the function had been like that in the first place. Convinced, will change. :)
