Not having any understanding of drop stacks I viewed the video - not a good production and would, I think, lose sales. My email program (the Bat) has virtual folders which cleverly enable emails to be seen as a collective group even though they belong in disparate 'folders'. In the bat's case given some rules these virtual folders are self maintaining and so require no drag and dropping - extremely useful. I think something in XY would be great - drag files to a virtual folder(s) and they are seen as a collection with hierarchy yet not physically moved at all. Scripting could become very useful to manipulate such collections as actual moves from such a virtual folder would 'find' the real path and process.

So, still no wiser about drop stacks I would love to see this exploited not to copy other FM's but introduce something more exciting and useful. Imagine being able to set a virtual folder that collects, automatically, files matching certain criteria plus others dragged and dropped.

That's more or less a Finding Tab (which we already have) plus Search Results caching (which will come, together with non-automatic Drop Stacks). Yep, that's all quite exciting. Pity that Dual Pane will have to come first.

Path Finder 5 on Mac OS X has a very usable approach. You can check it out in this video where they show the stack in action roughly 10% of the way into the video.

Okay, checked the video. My idea of DS was rather something like a Virtual Folder. It would also have a representation in the tree. What is shown in the video is rather meant for quickly collecting items from different locations and then act on them together (like moving/copying them somewhere), right? And you have always only one DS, and it's not retained between sessions?

Actually, wouldn't XY be able to do that already with just a slight adjustment? I mean just create a Category in the Catalog, call it 'DropBox', start drag-n-dropping things on it and then (this would be the actual change) allow file operations to be performed on them. Possibly via Context menu. Right click on category could show the "Move/Copy/Backup to" submenu for example, probably even better just a default right-click menu (which includes the "Move/Copy/Backup to" menu), but I don't know if files from different folders can be part of a selection (so that the "Cut/Copy" entries work correctly). It would also be neat to allow a drag-n-drop operation from the catalog (for categories and entries which refer to file system objects like folders/files). That way one could also keep groups of files that you usualy want to open together in a program and just drag the category on to it.
This is something I've been hoping for for quite a while to be honest. That way I could save selections of files which I need a bit more often. I'm also a programmer and have to copy a few specific files from various folders to a single destination for a release and other similar activities (yes, I could write a script for that but just drag-n-dopping things is much easier ).

Would this accomplish the requirements for those who actually know what drop stack means (I don't really...)? If not what would be missing?

The idea is good and therefore it's already possible. It's not in the Catalog's context menu, but Catalog Items and Categories support Move/Copy/Backup To via main menu (including keyboard shortcuts). So, indeed, it is a working drop stack.

Oh I didn't know that! would it be possible to add that first segment (the xyplorer specific part of the normal context menu and top of the file menu) to the catalogs context menu somehow? If you hadn't told me the file menu could be used for this I'd never have found it

I'm wondering if this wouldn't begin to make the cat context menus just a bit unwieldy for those functions that are most used to operate on the entries?

Therefore, here's just a thought: Once a user has their catalog entries setup, how often would you use the "maint" functions, like Add&Insert/Move up&dn/Del & rename, etc. vs the "use" functions, like Open/Go to/copy, etc? Could those be possibly shifted down one level to a "maint" submenu, if that is user desired, via some option, even a tweak?

Because right now, when I open the context menus for selecting an option via touchpad/mouse, they take a sizable chunk of screen space...and thus getting to desired "use" option is not as conv.

Like I said, just a thought to consider.

Did I ever say to remove them? No...I suggested being able to optionally put them in a sub-menu of the context menu so that main context menu would thus have less items that would be more often used, ok? This would especially be needed if more items are added to these menus, as was just suggested above by Creat.
