Close [x] icon on each tab

I hope that when we get asked to name any application that uses tabs we'd say Firefox, Internet Explorer, latest beta of Miranda IM, XYplorer etc. Basically, the first 3 of those provide the ability to close tabs via that [x] box aligned against the right-side of every tab. It would be very convenient if XYplorer was to provide such ability. This of course would not be the case if tabs are iconized, but for all other circumstances...yes please

And by the way - when you try to start Opera (doubleclicking Opera shortcut) when it is already opened then the new empty tab appears in opera. In XYplorer it'll be comfortable too (certainly not in "allow multiple instances" mode).

Quite frankly I absolutely hate this feature in every tabbed program I've ever seen. In fact, in a couple of cases the implementation has been so awful and wasteful of space that it drove me away from even using the program.

If it's optional fine, but it darn well better not be forced on all of us!

Closing a tab can be done by dbl-click already. See Configuration | Tabs | On Dbl-Click...
BTW, you can create a clone of the current tab by dbl-clicking the grey space right of the tabs.

Still, I think each tab can be thought of as a window and each window should have an [x] to close it. So we either get our minds together and implement it right, with input from TheQwerty, or make it optional but nevertheless introduce such feature.

I can only think of 2 (using just mouse) :
a) through config on dbl-click
b) right-click and then close

There are a couple of apps that are used by millions of people, namely Internet Explorer and Firefox, which have such one-click close capability. I am not saying XY should incorporate all possibilities, but it should include ways from the most popular ones because that's what people are used to and having similar functionality across a wide range of apps is certainly beneficial.

As for me the quickest way is to press "Ctrl+W". But in some rare cases (like holding a cup of coffee with the left hand ) it's comfortable to click [x] button on the tab - and many users (as I see each day) use mouse to do almost averything on computer, except writing messages.

If I'm not mistaking in Firefox the [x] button is shown only on active tab - maybe it's a good compromise?

Of course it should be optional.

2. View -> Current Tab -> Close Tab
3. Close Tab Toolbar Button
4. CKS: Ctrl+W (Default) or any other key combination you'd like.
5. Catalog using ::#351;
6. Address Bar/Go To using ::#351;
7. UDC using #351;
8. Configuration -> Tabs -> On dbl-click.
9. Middle Click
10. According to the wiki Shift+Click (this doesn't work for me though).

The best implementation I've ever seen of it is in Firefox when using the Tab Mix Plus extension and that's only because they've allowed for so many configurations:

• Never
• On all tabs.
• Only on current tab.
• Only on tabs wider than x pixels.
• Only on tabs that the user has hovered over for x msec.
• On the current tab and any tab that the user has hovered over for x msec.

Plus you can choose to display it on either the left or right side of the tabs, so you have a total of 11 options for displaying close buttons on tabs. The only useful option that I think they are missing is On all tabs but current.

But I think this is also a bit of overkill for XY. I believe a very large portion of XY's users would be completely satisfied with just the options of Never and On all tabs.

c) Most mice these days don't come with a middle button and using mousewheel for clicking is out of ordinary.
d) That's not one click because you have to hold a button to create a combo.

I think the best implementation of this would be to have [x] on each active tab and if another tab is inactive then [x] is greyed out and it's only functional if hovered over the [x]. I also don't have a problem with it being optional, I don't want to enforce my ways on everyone else

You seriously need to watch your mouth! All of a sudden you use whole words and thought it'd be a good idea to insult like there is no tomorrow?

What stupid and what isn't is a matter of opinion. Likewise, what great and what isn't is a matter of opinion. Also, if a member did not think it was worth responding then it is most likely because he/she hold a neutral view on such suggestion. There is no point in trying to make us feel bad if we don't respond.

Please don't put words in my mouth by implying I was trying to come up with a list of single click methods. I never claimed they were - what I said was they were "all the ways I knew of." Clearly you wrongly assumed I meant single click because you'd like to convey that I'm a moron who doesn't know the difference between the keyboard and the mouse, am unable to count, or some other silly reason. Anyone else would correctly assume that I was implying that these were the ways I knew of for closing a tab.

Heck if I was using the same standard that you used originally of "using just mouse" only 3 of those 10 are invalidated, though you could painfully still accomplish 2 of them using just the mouse.

Besides, in that last post you've changed the conditions yet again.
First it was an easy way to close tabs.
Then an easy way to close tabs using just the mouse.
Then an easy way to close tabs using a single click from the mouse.
Then an easy way to close tabs using a single click from the mouse but not a middle mouse button or wheel acting as such.
