catalog and existing tabs

Post by Muroph »

imagine you click on the item "c:\xx\" in the catalog.
if there's already a tab pointing to "c:\xx\", xy will select this tab instead of going to that location in the current tab.
this is more annoying than useful to me.
is there a way to turn it off?

Pardon me if I'm asking the obvious, but why would you want to have 2 tabs with the same location? Is it more difficult to go to the tab where that location is already displayed?

Yup, XY is optimized to reduce unnecessary duplicate tabs. But you can overide that behavior by holding shift or ctrl when you click on a catalog item.

i don't want 2 tabs with the same location.
i always have 6 tabs opened at any time, so it wouldn't matter even if that was the case.
but 8 out of 10 times i have a bunch of files selected in c:\xx\ and want to go to c:\xx\yy\, so going to the yy folder in the current tab is not a good idea.

i know that, but holding ctrl or shift will open a new tab, and that's not what i'm looking for.
i just want the catalog to behave like the tree and not try to guess what i want to do.
this is how Don said it's supposed to be, so i thought there was a way to disable that feature.

i could use a goto script, but then all custom folder icons would be replaced with the script icon.

Okay, coming back to this. Currently there are 5 ways to go to a new location by switching to any existing tab pointing to that location rather than overwriting the current tab's location:
- Favorite Folders
- Favorite Files
- Special System Folders
- Hotlist
- Catalog

I admit that the logic behind this (why those 5???) is not very jumping into your face. So, I'd like to hear some opinions on this. Is it alright as it is (and has always been), or do you agree with Muroph that at least Catalog should not switch to an existing tab but always use the current one (unless it's locked of course).

Or, in other words: Should Catalog behave like a alternate tree or a favorites panel?

(Hotlist is another candidate for revision: it's made from history but plays by the rules of favorites...)

I hear the rustle of a tweak in the woods that would likely best handle this issue...
That is, unless it may be popular enough to be Config'd.
Still spending WAY TOO much time here! But it's such a pleasure helping XY be a treasure!

I'd prefer to hardcode it.

I admit I was surprised that Catalog and Hotlist behave that way. It's a relict from the times when Catalog was just a Favorites Panel... but maybe it's good. Muroph was the only one ever complaining...

Hardcode as in? :?

I can see the advantage of both ways based on situation, but it would really depend on individual users needs/desires...for me, I see Catalog as Favorites on steriods, if you will.

... as in "keep it as it is". :)
