Thank you, it was the virus scanner!!
I have Mcafee Viruscan configured to scan files when writing and reading from disk. Changing it to scan files only when writing does not cause a delay in XYplorer
The delay was not so noticeable in Windows Explorer probably because it reads and displays specific icons one be one and never blocked you from seeing the files.

Continue with the optimizations, specially under Vista SP1 are much needed
